Egungun: Ancestor worship.
My new series at my amazing gallery owner Olivier Castaing until December 20. In Africa, the dead of the family must be honored. For in many African cultures, death does not really exist, the spirit leaves the body to continue its life in the world of the dead, that of the ancestors.
Among the Yoruba, these dead manifests themselves to their descendants through an entity called EGOUN.
It is the spirit of the dead who returns to earth under beautiful loincloths decorated with applications of cut fabric, embroidered and adorned with shells and sequins, bone, and magic wood.
Family and clan societies, strictly reserved for men, have been formed around Egoun the revenant. They evoke the dead, call them and take care of them on earth.
Égoun serves as an intermediary with the souls of the afterlife.

Ma nouvelle série chez mon incroyable galeriste Olivier Castaing Olivier Castaing] à partir du 9 novembre.
En Afrique, les morts de la famille doivent être honorés. Car dans de nombreuses cultures africaines, la mort n’existe pas vraiment, l’esprit quitte le corps pour continuer sa vie dans le monde des morts, celui des ancêtres.
Ces morts se manifestent, chez les Yoroubas, à leurs descendants par l'intermédiaire d'une entité appelée ÉGOUN.
C'est l'esprit des morts qui revient sur terre sous de beaux pagnes décorés d'applications d'étoffe découpée, brodées et ornementées de coquillages et de paillettes, d’os, de bois magique.
