Upcoming exhibition, At the Thresholds, with .studio Aditya Rayn Bhat .art

At the thresholds, experience remains in a state that is never fully defined. Time is no longer linear, nor is space a fixed boundary; both shift continuously between entry and exit, appearance and disappearance.

Four resident artists, approaching the threshold through time, body, space, and narrative. It appears as a cut in time, a pause in the body, an interval in relation, and a spatial condition of transition.

Lamcat maps fleeting relations through walking along the river and lunar cycles. Yuwei Ma explores interruption and movement through bodily gestures and nomadic objects, producing an “in-between” of relations. Aditya Ryan Bhat reveals spatial liminality through the logic of the door/threshold. Sofia Piacentini reconfigures intimacy within political narratives, where the sweetness of power obscures its cost.

Together, these practices form a shifting field of perception in which the threshold is not a line, but a continuous condition. Meaning is not presented, but momentarily activated through encounter and transition.

New resident artist .art

Sofia Piacentini is a Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture, photography, tattooing, and installation. Her work builds large-scale narratives that reflect on contemporary life through satire, observation, and familiar imagery that shifts on closer look.

She moves between mediums depending on what each idea calls for, rather than sticking to one approach. Her work often draws from political and cultural realities, not to make direct statements, but to observe, reframe, and hold onto moments from the present.

Being both Chinese and American, and having lived in both countries, continues to shape how she approaches culture, identity, and representation.

During her residency at ACENTRICSPACE, she is developing new paintings and an installation that combines sculpture, tattoo, and photography.

New resident artist Aditya Ryan Bhat

Aditya Ryan Bhat is a musician living in Narrm/Melbourne, Australia. He uses acoustic and electronic materials to create diverse combinations of sounds. Trained in percussion, Aditya experiments with physical properties of objects and instruments, combining them with various forms of synthesised sound, field recordings, and live processing.  This music explores the interconnections between the histories of colonialism/imperialism and ecological issues.

With a longstanding interest in Chinese history, philosophy, and the writing system, Aditya plans to explore these areas further while staying at the residency in Zhujiajiao. Also, he will perform at Trigger (Shanghai), dv (Suzhou), Toku Gallery (Nanjing), and Sounds Unfound (Xiamen), and is looking forward to immersing in the Chinese experimental music scene. At the residency, Aditya is thinking about Shanghai’s layered history as a colonial and postcolonial city, its closeness to the sea, rivers, and lakes, and ecological progress taking place here today.

New resident artist

Yuwei Ma is a contemporary artist and researcher whose primary medium is ceramics. She received her BFA from the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University (Ceramic Art and Design) and later obtained both her MFA and PhD from Kyoto City University of Arts in Japan. Her practice and research emerge from the intersection of language, symbols, materials, and concepts, focusing on how boundaries are continuously produced and transformed through relationships and actions.

In Ma’s work, ceramics are not merely functional objects or traditional craft media, but rather a neutral material that oscillates between the natural and the artificial. From a posthumanist perspective, she deconstructs conventional frameworks of function, enabling her works to become sites where meaning is constantly generated through the transformation and interaction of different materials. Her practice extends across sensory and experiential dimensions, establishing both tension and continuity between art and everyday life. Through interaction and perception, viewers are invited to enter the process of the work’s becoming. By interweaving bodily and aesthetic experience, she seeks to construct a space of deep dialogue, in which ceramics function as an open structure connecting materiality, perception, and thought.

She continues to explore the complex relationship between materiality and perception through ceramics, installation, and interdisciplinary practices, expanding new theoretical and practical dimensions for ceramics in a contemporary context.

New resident artist .studio

Lam Suet Ying, known as Lamcat, is a Hong Kong cartographic artist. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts Education (2024). Lamcat’s practice combines observation, travel, and research to produce art maps that explore memory, identity, and urban transformation. Her original character, "Sugar Cat", plays a narrative role in her map-drawing, integrating fragmented subjective memories of a region with objective research to reconstruct a humanized map.

Her process often begins with meticulous attention to detail: Streets, fragments, traces that insist on being seen. Yet beneath this precision lies a quiet questioning: what does it mean to map a place that cannot be fully held, remembered, or completed?

As the beginning part of her exploration, Lamcat participates in an artist residency in Shanghai, where, as an outsider, she seeks to expand her creative horizons and re-examine the meaning of cartographic art through engagement with unfamiliar environments.

Upcoming exhibition, When is everything at once? with

Opening 27 March, 4:00 pm.

“When everything happens at once” is no longer a statement, but an open question: When is everything at once?

It points both to a condition of contemporary perception and to a deeper mode of being. Within this question, time no longer unfolds linearly, space no longer remains stable, and perception itself becomes fragmented and unstable. The relationships between history, the body, and the world are continuously overlapping, misaligned, and in formation.

Bringing together five artists, the exhibition approaches this question through multiple trajectories—narrative, perception, space, orientation, and material.

New resident artist

Philipp Mettler is a Swiss abstract painter whose background spans global business, jazz improvisation, and extensive travel across Latin America, Africa, Europe, and, more recently, Asia. Having graduated summa cm laude from the University of St. Gallen, he committed fully to painting, developing a practice informed by Swiss precision and spontaneous energy in equal measure.

He travels because it nourishes his practice - and because it confuses him. Both, he finds, are necessary.

He is currently interested in translating the life stories and identities of Shanghai-based art lovers into large-scale abstract works. Using Marc Brackett's "Permission to Feel" method, Mettler engages his subjects in a collaborative process that transforms personal life experiences, as messy as they come, into energetic, raw abstract paintings. His work draws on influences including Gerhard Richter and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

During his residency at ACENTRICSPACE (March–May 2026), Mettler will develop the Personal Painting series in Shanghai, leading to a solo exhibition at the end of his stay. Who knows — he might just decide to stick around.

New resident artist

Mai-Li Helweg is a Berlin-based artist with a background in fashion design. After beginning her career at Alexander McQueen, she worked on textile developments for houses including Chanel and Louis Vuitton.

Her practice spans painting, textile, and object. Drawing on early 20th century embroideries encountered while working as embroidery designer in Switzerland, as well as elements of her mixed heritage, she explores ornament as a cultural language. Working with fabric and paper, she creates scroll-like surfaces that imagine a fictional world consisting of ornament and decoration as memory.

New resident artist

Abdelhamid Ameur is an Algerian-born graphic designer working across client projects, self-initiated work, and teaching. Using drawing as a performative tool, he explores various media and platforms such as paper, textile, ceramic, and digital spaces to connect letters, stars, ants, strangers, and experiences for and with communities.

Recent projects include his involvement in the speculative and empowering work in GLITCH-UtopiaDome50, the collective research and exploration of southern perspectives in the self-initiated Southern Drawing Club, and his teaching at HfG Karlsruhe, where he covers foundational skills and knowledge on typography as well as interdisciplinary seminars and workshops on AI demystification, medial projection of the Mediterranean Ocean, and video game platforms.

New resident artist

Caillin Zhang is a Chinese-Australian multidisciplinary artist residing and working in Sydney, largely focused on photographic mediums. Her artistic practice explores the compositional quality, aesthetics, structural forms, and complex layers of the natural landscape, with emphasis on the absence/presence of human bodies.

Her practice is also largely intuitive and relies on abstractive processes. She is concerned with how human perception of space and place is carved from an individual’s own experiences, identity, and intentions, and their subjective view of the environment around them.

Caillin received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Art School, Sydney, in 2022, with her major in Photomedia. She has also completed a Diploma of Life Science at the University of Technology Sydney in 2018, and her interest in biological and ecological processes continually inspires her artmaking practice and deepens her understanding of natural environments.

New resident artist

Matisse Douglass is an Australian artist based in Alice Springs (Mparntwe) in Central Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design (2017), and her practice is shaped by a range of personal and environmental influences. The remoteness of Central Australia, along with its vast landscapes and rich culture, has been a significant source of inspiration in her recent work.

Working primarily in abstract painting, Matisse takes an experimental, process-driven approach to her work. Her practice emphasises the physical act of creation, using intuitive and somatic methods to respond to her surroundings. Her work often emerges as an internal interpretation of her external environment, exploring and processing emotional responses to place through gesture, movement, and material experimentation.

She has exhibited in both group and solo shows and undertaken residencies in New York, USA, and Mongolia. While painting remains central, she is increasingly expanding into mixed media and textile-based work.
