“Color itself is never restrictive; it is only my own constraints that keep me from choosing it.” — Shi Zhiying

From the monochrome restraint of her early works to the chromatic freedom of her recent Color Period, Shi Zhiying invites viewers into a contemplative space where color and form quietly converge. As perception shifts between shape and color, painting transcends representation, unfolding as an exploration of perception itself.

Matthew Liu Fine Arts is pleased to share Arranz-Bravo in the Bassat Collection, currently on view at Fundació Arranz-Bravo in Spain. Lluís Bassat first encountered Eduard Arranz-Bravo’s work in Barcelona in 1967, marking the beginning of a friendship and artistic dialogue that has continued for nearly six decades. Bringing together paintings, drawings, and sculptures from the Bassat Collection, the exhibition reflects the vitality, sensuality, and expressive force of Arranz-Bravo’s distinctive visual language.

Matthew Liu Fine Arts × Pillars Gallery × DONGLIANG present Weaving Summer, Homeward Bound, a summer exhibition featuring 19 artists from China and abroad. Exploring the dialogue between contemporary art, design, and everyday life through diverse materials, the exhibition reimagines Living with Art by dissolving the boundaries between gallery and living space. Represented by Matthew Liu Fine Arts, NUN-Fuxiaotong presents her signature perforated Xuan paper works. Through thousands of hand-pierced incisions, she transforms traditional materials into poetic contemporary expressions that reflect on nature, memory, and time.

In an age shaped by the speed and excess of digital imagery, the works of Bernard Faucon invite viewers back into a slower and more contemplative way of seeing. Presented by SIGMA, Water Clear as Childhood Tears revisits decades of practice by the pioneering French staged-photography artist. From the plaster figures suspended within the endless summers of Provence to the quiet, spiritual interiors of his later works, Faucon transformed photography into a deeply personal language of memory, dreams, and time. Bathed in soft, painterly light, these images feel less like documents and more like fragile traces of an inner world — one that continues to resist the efficiency of contemporary visual culture.

Beginning with his experimental ink paintings, Shen Chen has consistently worked through a “flat-on-the-floor” approach. Laying the canvas horizontally, he meticulously applies and layers vertical brushstrokes by hand, gradually building horizontal bands of color and subtle tonal gradations. This method transforms both the rhythm and logic of painting. The brushstroke is no longer an immediate expression of emotion, but a process of continual calibration. Traces of the artist’s body remain restrained yet present, embedded in the beginning and end of every mark.

Fernando Prats explores the relationship between nature, time, and memory through traces formed by smoke, gravity, and the beating of bird wings. In his latest exhibition, “Vesica Piscis”, Prats intervenes within the Romanesque galleries, creating a subtle encounter between contemporary artistic language and ancient spiritual imagery. The Andes, the Atacama Desert, and Antarctica continue to shape the poetic foundation of his practice. Smoke marks, sediment, and movement become more than visual elements — they emerge as quiet records of time itself.
