In July 2016, Brian, Sally, Danyi, and Colin opened SHAKE with a mission: to create the first funk and soul supper club in the city — a place where one could experience world-class food, cocktails, and live music under one roof.
SHAKE was a place where people walked out feeling better than when they walked in.
Our home lasted almost exactly six years. Nothing is forever — especially music venues — and it pains us to announce that the era of SHAKE is officially over.
Running a nightclub is hard, anywhere in the world. We cannot battle the storm of COVID-19, economic conditions, and the climate for live musicians any longer.
We are extremely proud of what we accomplished in these six years.
We made sure most of our shows had a whole horn section, because that’s how you should experience this music. We came up with concept after concept, show after show. We didn’t want to be “good for Shanghai” – we always wanted SHAKE to be on the level of clubs in New York, Paris, or Tokyo.
We would like to thank everyone for their support. First, the musicians. We’ve had several bands and singers, and they are all world class. Whether they played to six people or a full house, they brought the energy, passion, and soul every damn time.
We want to thank all of our staff, who gracefully maneuvered around a room that was like an obstacle course at 11pm. We love you.
We thank our suppliers. We thank the designers who created a space that looked like no other. We thank our neighborhood for putting up with all the bass, brass and screams of joy.
Most of all, we thank you for your support over the years. You gave us a reason to keep going. It was a pleasure to have you visit our home.
And most importantly, let’s do our part to keep music alive in Shanghai. Please continue to support venues like JZ, Chair Club, Yuyintang, our sister venue Heyday, and the many others who do this almost every day. Don’t take them for granted. Nothing can replace the feeling of live music.
This is just one door closing.
Thank you and goodnight.
