Located in Shaanxi province, the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, listed as World Heritage Sites in 1987, is the greatest archaeological discoveries in the world, a life-size clay soldier poised for battle. Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China and a man fond of grand projects (the Great Wall of China also was his idea), arranged for this burial site. Begun in 246 BCE the grave mound survives to a height of 51.3 meters within a rectangular, double-walled enclosure oriented north-south. It is reported that 700.000 men worked on the construction of the mausoleum for 38 years. Nearly 200 accompanying pits containing thousands of life-size terra cotta soldiers, terra cotta horses, and bronze chariots and weapons. The tomb itself has not yet been excavated. There are lots of mysteries waiting for us to uncover.
