Who doesn't love some new accessories?! These pretty pieces are being sold by a Miao lady in Xijiang, Guizhou. The Miao people are famous for their silver jewellery and embroidery and selling both these crafts is now a source of income for many Miao women. Have you picked up any souvenirs like this in China?

The remains of the ancient civilization at Sanxingdui in Sichuan were first discovered in 1929, but not excavated until the 1980s. What was revealed was absolutely spectacular: a sophisticated civilization (yet apparently without writing) unlike anything found in Chinese archaeology before. In 2001 a potentially related site 40km away at Jinsha was also discovered. Many thousands of artefacts have been unearthed from both sites. This exhibition featuring highlights from both excavations is on at the Grand Canal Museum in Beijing until October 10th.

The tiny Confucian temple in Laoling, Shandong. In the hall, Confucius sits in the middle with four other sages, including Mencius, on either side. Historically statues of Confucius have been controversial, with some saying that only his teachings, and not the man himself, should be worshipped.
