“What is a gallery weekend?!” – some people have asked us in the past few weeks, when we started preparing our event. The idea was developed by galleries in Berlin in 2005. Each year the best galleries join forces to invite collectors worldwide to come and see the best exhibitions the galleries have to offer. Beijing is home to the largest community of artists in China and

a major place for artistic production the world has never seen. The Gallery Weekend Beijing provides a spotlight onto the exciting work by Beijing based artists through the lens of the exhibitions of our participating galleries. Artists, when they create art works in their studios they most of the time have their next gallery exhibition in mind. Sometimes they spend years thinking about how to best present their ideas about art. This is a long process filled with hard work, ambition, intellectual effort and strong emotions. For every artist an exhibition is the moment where all this comes together in a moment that reveals what art can be. So at the core of the Gallery Weekend is the idea that art can be best experienced in a gallery exhibition. In the more relaxed atmosphere of the gallery space collectors can explore and experience art in more rewarding ways than at art fairs. Art lovers can connect in more meaningful ways, with the energies put forth by the artist in his art works and the gallery provides the environment for in-depth conversations about the artists. Modern history has proven time and again that artists that in the end were writing art history had very long term working relations with galleries: Picasso and Kahnweiler for example or Donald Judd and Paula Cooper and more recently Gerhard Richter and Marian Goodman. Galleries at the end of the day are very strong partners for artists and collectors for a sustained long-term development. The goal of Gallery Weekend Beijing is to support the gallery system so we can all enjoy art now and in the future.

At this talk, three guest speakers, playing different leading roles in the industry,of contemporary art, discussed how to buck the trend under the special circumstance. By seeking common ground while reserving differences, we hope to take the state of "volcanoes nearer here" as the starting point of the dialogue, and take the 9-day Gallery weekend Beijing as the entry point, to discuss how to digest the anxiety of waiting and save energy for the future.
