I wrote this album review on Jovi's recent "2035" Album. You might want to take a look...very interesting. 💥💥💥☺
JOVI: 2035 ALBUM REVIEW
(COMPLETE REVIEW!)
The story just keeps going as Jovi adds another album to his catalog, making it the 5th. He is among the African rappers with the biggest discographies. 5 albums, 11 Eps, 1 mixtape. This review is our understanding of the the 13 track project.
👉TRACK 1: KOBRA SINCE 1998
"Serenity" is the word to describe this intro which evokes little feelings of melancholy. The beat starts with rain pours at the back as it grows with Reniss' vocal entry "Love is blind, and you know it. You no fit see me, ehhhh... ".
Jovi emphasizes on his status on Cameroonian Hip Hop (Its kind of obvious around here who be the GOAT)and how despite all these years, he didn't let go his values " Mboko no di bend, meat no dey, na only bone".
I guess it's the reason why he has always been a badass (kobra) from way back. If you've known Jovi for a while now, you know he don't play with principles. Things that made him stand strong.
👉TRACK 2: MAN PASS MAN 5
The heat is turned up as Jovi comes this time around on a Drill beat titled "Man Pass man 5". Harder than a furnace, Jovi is hazardous as he sprays shots in the air for whoever deserves with. His haters are targeted and and opportunists ain't left out either " Maintenant quand on reach à mbeng on devient artiste engagé". Switching from French to Pidgin English, Jovi signals comfort on the hook as everything is "top" (Fine).
"Matinga dey for terre with Matango, comot chuckin turn back witty tolambo". Even if you don't get pidgin, the way this phrase above is delivered was just mind blowing. Every Jovi album has a man pass man series and this is part 5. Nothing but hardness with a catchy hook. Top top top toptop top.
👉TRACK 3: ANDRE MARIE TALLA
The room starts boiling as the 3rd track is also a Drill beat with a sample at the back. Andre Marie Talla is a Cameroonian music legend whom despite his genius with music, he is visually impaired. Jovi personifies himself to Andre Marie and is on indirect mockery mood as he can't see his competition (rivals) like Andre Marie Talla in dark shades.
It is just another level of mastery of French Hip Hop flow. Despite their efforts, they are no where close "Tu forces mais sa ne tchaa pas... ". " Old news bro, you be na throwback. If na me this competition, I must get to work. 😭
👉TRACK 4: MON ANNIVERSAIRE
The mood on "mon anniversaire" is that of celebration. 2035 album was released on Jovi's daughter, Yajé's birthday. This song is prolly dedicated to her as he goes in with "Everything I do is for you.. ". The picky Guitar notes at the back remind us of some other " Bikutsi" inspired beats Jovi has worked on.
It is a Trap beat with much animation as the intention is to go wild "Zig zig zig zig zig zig". Birthday songs are eternal as everyone just needs to connect on their own birthday. Can't wait for next year to go wild with this.
👉TRACK 5: NOUVEL HOMME (FEAT YOUSSOUPHA
Jovi goes for French rapper of Congolese descent on " Nouvel Homme". Nouvel Homme in English means "new man". Jovi digs into old school Rumba and brings out that chord only Tabu Ley Rochereau (congolese music legend) could do. It is a fusion of Rumba and Trap and feels like a gift to Youssoupha and his people. Jovi let's Youssoupha exploits more of the song and guess what, Youssoupha is Tabu Ley Rochereau's son. They all philosophical with lines like "Je suis pas rich moi, Je suis pauvre avec de l'argent". (I'm not rich. I'm a broke man with money).
They make allusion to Africa not being rich cash wise but very wealthy with raw materials. They express their professionalism and love for music as they say " Yous et moi sont pas des novices". Imagine rapping in French with a French rapper. Jovi is so daring and superconfident. He also gives a shout-out to the Congolese in Lingala. A remix with Fally Ipupa will be a awesome. This song is a desire for growth (transformation)🙌
👉TRACK 6: WOUNDED GRAND
"Wounded grand" deosnt necessarily mean injured, but a way of saying he is in danger mood (badass). That situation when you have no choice on them streets. It is doubled-phased as the first part is Jovi on his melodious flow with a special kind of accent. The transition is just magical as Jovi goes harder. He hits us with a paradox with the word Fish (bar fish) "We like for chop burning Fish o'boy I want na bar/I like fish, I hate fishy things, that one na bar... ".
Loving to eat bar fish and hating fishy things and declaring the phrase as a bar is insane. The Guitar notes feel like Soukous, blended in Boom Bap beats. Did you also feel the trumpet at the end? Lastly, a Jovi stan will feel a similarity in background sound with the second part of "Positioning" from the Mbokogod album. The kind of feeling you can't describe.
👉TRACK 7: MERCI (FEATURING RENISS)
Merci has church choral samples. The kind of song you show appreciation to God with (Hallelujah, I count my blessings). Jovi expresses his love for his fan base "Mbokogang" and doesn't consider them fans, but family.
It is this love for each other, coupled with God's mercy that pushes Jovi and RENISS to put their hands together in prayers to say "MERCI" (Thank you) to the Almighty. Reniss is flawless.
👉TRACK 8: SITONY
Sonically, "Sitony" is a wonder. The beat is fashioned to fit in a Rap way, while the background chords are Bikutsi inspired. The kicks also feel like it was okd school Blues music, while choral response sounds more like Jovi, filtered at the back. I don't feel like it's Nkodo Sitony singing, but done in the way Sitony would have done if he was standing in front of the mic about to respond to this melody.
Jovi adapts his flow to the complicated beat and it really matches what he referred some years ago as "My rap style is called how to rap a hit". He throws flowers on himself and feels like Dre and Nas in one body as he can cook his own beats amazingly, and flow "godly" like Nasir Jones would. Genius song. The feeling is pure nostalgia 🔥🔥
👉TRACK 9: TOFF
Jovi made a slang spelling out of the word "tough" and that's how the title "Toff" came about. A hard Trap beat to vibe on. He goes majestic with his flow and compares it to "soya" (Locally sold roastes meat). "Le son est bon comme le soya de la briq, tara sa répond.. ". The song is as hard as the title and Jovi has no intentions of stopping soon " I no go stop like this men dem want for relax".
If you were in a show or at the club, this would make you go nuts. The mood is that of domination and for you to stand up to Jovi, make sure you meet up with the "1 terabytes" digital space his discography occupies. 🙌😆 This can't be possible if God didn't put "extra steps on your ladder".
👉TRACK 10: KOPPO
Koppo is a Cameroonian OG rapper who evolved in the early 2000s. Koppo did Hip Hop in broken French and as someone with almost same street orientation (mboko) with music, Jovi thought it wise by paying respect to the legend. Koppo's "Si Tu Vois Ma Gos" hit from 2004 is sampled as hook and Jovi makes the beat pretty catchy and groovie.
The beginning has me thinking of "Family" released way back. Though Koppo expressed a breakup with his girl due to the difficulties in the country, Jovi expresses more of his hunger on the beat "inspiration no fit lack. Body flop only tracks". Jovi is on his egotrip and bottom line message is the desire for success (Faire du cash). If you know about Ransom, then you'll understand why Jovi needs two of him at the start of this song. OG.
👉TRACK 11: UP NORD (FEAT TAO)
Jovi takes us to North Cameroon with the melodies as TAO, la Reine du Sahel is invited to deliver her precious vocals on this dime. She makes it epic like it was Fatoumata Diawara with amazing vocals delivered in what seems to be "Fufulde" language. Jovi has always traced his ancestral migrative trends to Maroua from North Cameroon.
Jovi quotes the national team coach's " Danger theory" and has everyone giggling, while he admires the beauty of the Northern woman as he considers her to be smooth and beautiful. This beat would be very difficult for any other rapper, but Jovi finds a way round it. Epic and spiritual.
👉TRACK 12: TCHAKOUNTE
Pause! If you want to understand the sample behind "Tchakounte", divert to YouTube right now and type Pierre Didy Tchakounte "Makeladia" and listen to the song. Then come back and play Jovi's "Tchakounte". The album gets emotional as Jovi uses Tchakounte's melancholic voice to send across his message. Jovi expresses the negative effects of the Anglophone crisis on Cameroonians. Many have died and many others are currently displaced. All he has are unforgettable memories of now torn cities, which used to be closest to his heart (Bamenda, Kumba).
Jovi Jovi equally samples the speech of Revolutionary Burkinabé leader and pan-Africanist Thomas Sankara. Sankara talks to his people about doing the most to cancel external debts, while becoming massively productive. Similar to Cameroon, Sankara pointed out the capability for his country to boost food production, but due to disorganization, their country can't reach their goals and keep depending on foreign aid.
"Those who feed you, impose their principles on you". Tchakounte is like a slap on the face of leaders and a cry for change in Cameroon. The envisaged 2035 Emergence seem to be farfetched as Cameroon's external debt for just 2023 is estimated at 12.137 billion dollars and Cameroon still imports toothpicks. This song is deeper than you think. Jovi is heartbroken.
👉TRACK 13: LES MATTAS
The outro to this album actually expresses the purpose to which it is intended. Debuting with a trumpet which comes as a warning, alert to us all, Jovi says "Remet le comptoir à Zéro", which to me means taking us back to the basics. The mood of " Les Mattas" is anger. Jovi paints the streets in a hard way.The difficulties in the country is the reason why the neighborhood is full of problems (mattas) and everywhere Jovi looks he says just problems "Since for sharp I di only fache, I no know for ma heart so n'a only rage. N'a mbere di chop wonna give me badge. Bollo no dey... "
The high rate of employment is creating anger in the heart of citizens, which is the primary cause to other many problems faced in the country. Juvenile deliquncy, scamming and drug abuse, are all some effects of unemployment. You should love this song more if you connect to the hardship happening in the country.
Reniss is the reason for the transition. The second part has Jovi on a lyrical perfection. Another thing you don't know is the bond and respect for Reniss. Did you know the second part of Les mattas is actually a sample of Reniss' "African luv"? Yeah, rush back to YouTube and type Reniss "African luv" and you will feel it. It was released under the " African Luv" Ep, all produced by Jovi Lemonstre himself.
Jovi and Reniss began this journey together and loyalty has bonded them throughout the years as he referred to her as the DNA of his music. There is no better way to show respect and close your 5th album. What a feeling.
🥽APPRECIATION
Every sample on the "2023" tells a deep story in connection to Cameroon. There is a lot of sonical reference to the Mbokogod era of production too. A sign that Jovi stayed true to himself and didn't switch. All songs produced by Lemonstre, except for Mon Anniversaire produced by Rex OTB Though Jovi expresses a couple of difficulties, he avoids pointing fingers directly on the whole project. He equally maintains his egotrip as a sign of comfort and domination on the game.
To me, the project is more like an eye-opener, reasons why it is named "2035". It is an introspection on our evolution as a nation. From the evaluations, the people will have to decide if the envisaged 2035 emergence of Cameroon by the current system is a farce or not. Same as this project is partly a challenge to a system that has ruled for more than 40 years now.
2035 to me is not just an album. It's a signal and a warning that we still behind and to meet up, a lot bas to be done. We also haven't appreciated him enough for his multilingual skills. Coming from the Anglophone regions with this mastery of French leaves me bewildered. The beats are very descriptive. From the above review, give your appreciation on 10 and your favorite songs.
Thanks for your patience!
