Hollywood Just Said: Human Creativity Cannot Be Replaced
Hollywood just sent a message to the entire world. Human creativity cannot be replaced.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body behind the Oscars, has announced that starting with the 99th Academy Awards scheduled for March 14, 2027, artificial intelligence is officially banned from acting and writing nominations.
- AI Acting Ban
Only roles demonstrably performed by humans with their consent can be nominated for acting awards. An AI-generated or AI-enhanced performance is not eligible, full stop.
- AI Writing Ban
Screenplays must be human-authored to qualify. You cannot use AI to write your script and still claim an Oscar nomination.
Production Proof
If the Academy suspects AI was used excessively in a film's production, they can demand proof of human creation. The burden is on the filmmaker.
Now here is why this matters deeply for Cameroon, Nigeria, and the entire African film industry.
We are at a crossroads. AI tools are flooding the market. Cheap, fast, and accessible. Some filmmakers across Africa are already experimenting with AI to cut production costs. This is understandable because resources are limited. But the Oscars have just drawn a clear line: the world still values human storytelling above machine output.
Nollywood produces over 2,500 films a year. Cameroonian cinema is finding its voice. Our stories, about our families, our streets, our politics, our faith, our laughter, are inherently human. No AI can replicate the texture of a Lagos market, the sound of Pidgin on a Douala corner, or the weight of a Yoruba proverb carried through generations.
That is our competitive advantage.
And with the new international film rules also announced, festival wildcards, multiple nominees per country, and the Oscar going to directors not governments, African filmmakers have more pathways to that stage than ever before.
Quick Summary of All New Rules
•AI banned from acting and writing categories
•Festival wins at Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto, Sundance or Busan can now qualify a film directly
•Multiple films from one country can now compete in the International category
•International Film Oscar now awarded to the director, not the country
•Actors can now receive multiple nominations in the same category
•99th Oscars: March 14, 2027
•100th Oscars: March 5, 2028
•From 2029: Oscars move to YouTube and Peacock Theater, making global access easier than ever
The Oscars are evolving. The question is whether we are evolving with them or watching from the sidelines.
Save this. Share it with every filmmaker, film lover, and creative you know.
