Donna Godchaux, The Grateful Dead
Choriste emblématique et figure rare dans l’univers du Grateful Dead, Donna Jean Godchaux a marqué de sa présence les années les plus psychédéliques du groupe. Véritable lien entre la Soul de Muscle Shoals et le Rock californien, elle a apporté une touche féminine et Gospel à l’épopée du Dead, entre 1972 et 1979.
Avant de rejoindre cette grande famille musicale, Donna Jean avait déjà une carrière solide. Originaire de Sheffield, AL, elle avait débuté dès l’âge de 15 ans comme chanteuse de studio à Muscle Shoals, temple de la Soul américaine. Elle y a prêté sa voix à des légendes telles qu’Elvis Presley (“Suspicious Mind”), Aretha Franklin et Otis Redding, et a participé à l’enregistrement du classique “When a Man Loves a Woman” de Percy Sledge, No.1 des classements Pop et R&B au printemps 1966.
Sa rencontre avec le pianiste Keith Godchaux, qu’elle a épousé en 1970, a profondément changé le cours de sa vie. Ensemble, ils ont approché Jerry Garcia lors d’un concert en 1971 et ont intégré peu après le Grateful Dead. Donna Jean est venue alors choriste officielle du groupe, participant à ses tournées et à plusieurs albums marquants. En parallèle, le couple a enregistré Keith and Donna (1975), avec la participation de Jerry Garcia, et collaboré au Jerry Garcia Band.
Après leur départ du Grateful Dead en 1979, les Godchaux ont fondé The Heart of Gold Band, avant que la mort tragique de Keith en 1980 ne mette fin à cette aventure. Installée ensuite à Florence, AL, avec son second mari, le bassiste Dave MacKay, Donna Jean est retournée travailler au légendaire Muscle Shoals Sound Studio et s’est ouvert vers le monde de la spiritualité.
Admise au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 1994 avec les autres membres du Dead, elle retrouve périodiquement la scène, notamment avec Kettle Joe’s Psychedelic Swamp R***e puis Donna Jean and the Tricksters. Elle est aussi apparue aux côtés de formations issues de la galaxie Dead comme Bob Weir & RatDog, Dark Star Orchestra ou Zero.
Donna Jean Godchaux est décédée le 2 novembre 2025 à Nashville, TN. Née Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay le 22 août 1947 à Sheffield, AL, elle avait 78 ans.

Donna Godchaux, The Grateful Dead
An emblematic backing vocalist and a rare female presence in the world of the Grateful Dead, Donna Jean Godchaux left a lasting mark on the band’s most psychedelic years. Bridging the Muscle Shoals Soul tradition with California Rock, she brought a feminine and Gospel touch to the Dead’s cosmic journey between 1972 and 1979.
Before joining that musical family, Donna Jean had already built a solid career. A native of Sheffield, AL, she began working as a studio singer at just 15 in Muscle Shoals, the legendary home of American Soul. She lent her voice to icons such as Elvis Presley (“Suspicious Minds”), Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding, and took part in the recording of the classic “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge, a No.1 hit on both the Pop and R&B charts in the spring of 1966.
Her meeting with pianist Keith Godchaux, whom she married in 1970, would change her life forever. Together, they met Jerry Garcia at a concert in 1971 and soon joined the Grateful Dead. Donna Jean became the group’s official backing vocalist, performing on tour and appearing on several landmark albums. At the same time, the couple recorded Keith and Donna (1975), featuring Jerry Garcia, and collaborated with the Jerry Garcia Band.
After leaving the Grateful Dead in 1979, the Godchauxs founded The Heart of Gold Band, an endeavor cut short by Keith’s tragic death in 1980. Later, Donna Jean settled in Florence, AL, with her second husband, bassist Dave MacKay. She returned to work at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and turned toward a more spiritual life.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 alongside the other members of the Dead, she periodically returned to the stage with Kettle Joe’s Psychedelic Swamp R***e and later Donna Jean and the Tricksters. She also made appearances with various Grateful Dead-related acts, including Bob Weir & RatDog, Dark Star Orchestra, and Zero.
Donna Jean Godchaux passed away on November 2, 2025, in Nashville, TN. Born Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay on August 22, 1947, in Sheffield, AL, she was 78 years old.
