Regional economy is expected to grow by 2.2% in 2026, after a 2.4% expansion in 2025, and show a partial recovery of up to 2.5% in 2027. If these projections prove correct, and the will have maintained five years with average growth near 2.3%, an insufficient level to provide a sustained increase in income per inhabitant, close development gaps, and significantly expand political spaces.

Thus is stated in the #𝑬𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒄𝑺𝒖𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚 𝒐𝒇 #𝑳𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 #𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒏 2026, presented this week by the Executive Secretary José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs.

At the regional level, projects a marked heterogeneity at the subregional level. South America is expected to grow 2.5% in both 2026 and 2027. Growth in Central America is expected to be 1.6% in 2026 and 2.8% in 2027. The Caribbean is expected to grow 5.6% in 2026 and 7.9% in 2027, driven by increased growth in Guyana; if this country is not included, the subregional average would be 1.1% in 2026 and 2.2% in 2027.

🌎🚧 With the trend of low growth faced by the region, Eclac calls for driving productive formalization to increase productivity and escape the trap of low capacity for growth.

📕New annual report by the United Nations regional commission 𝑬𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝑺𝒖𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑳𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏 𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒏 2026 projects regional economic growth of 2.2% in 2026 and 2.5% in 2027 and advises that increasing productivity and growth is necessary for reducing informality through productive formalization strategies.

🌎✨In a new geoeconomic and geopolitical context, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are facing unprecedented demographic change that gives rise to multiple challenges for public policy and development in the region. This reality requires leaving behind fragmented responses to move toward state policies that are sustainable in time, experts agreed during the inauguration of the Sixth session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development, which will continue through Thursday, August 20 in Montevideo 🇺🇾.

In the opening session of this meeting, which brings together nearly 600 people, participants reaffirmed that the is the regional roadmap regarding population and development, as well as being an essential framework to place human rights at the center of public policy.

🎤The Conference was inaugurated by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary; Diene Keita, Executive Director of the UNFPA; and María Cristina Lustemberg Haro, Minister of Public Health of Uruguay.

The report addresses topics including the international context, external accounts, economic activity and the evolution of employment, inflation and fiscal and monetary policies in the region, providing updated growth projections for each of Latin America and the Caribbean’s countries and regional statistical annexes.
