Bring a STEEL carabiner with you to El Chalten - this is required for a permit, and restricting the number of carabiners in town is how authorities regulate the number of hikers on the trail. Thirty crossings in three days, feet numb from the raging glacial melt. When doing a river crossing, it's always easiest to walk in a tangent to how the river is running. Brace against your front leg and step carefully - rocks are known to scoot beneath your feet. We paid $2.50 for a two hour ferry across Lago General Carrera! Incredibly cheap, and incredibly beautiful. Our favorite pairing. Check the wind before you head out on this loop, and never attempt a pass if there are storms building up in front or behind you. The second pass of Cerro Castillo has blown experienced hikers to their deaths, and freezing whiteouts at elevation are common. Bring a two liter box of wine with you out on this river ... spending all day in the packraft is both exhausting and relaxing, and settling in with a gulp of Clos at the end of the night is worth the weight.
