Kia Orana,
Today, I want to share the beautiful story of my mum, NORMA RANGI NGAMETUA IRO (née Joseph Vati)—a woman whose life was filled with love, creativity, and incredible artistry.
Mum was married to our late dad, Teava Iro, whom she loved dearly. Together they were blessed with 8 children—6 girls and 2 boys. I am the youngest of her blessings.
Mum was born in Papaaroa, Rarotonga, of Aitutakian descent, and was the youngest of seven siblings. She grew up surrounded by a love for culture and tradition, and she quickly developed a passion for sewing, crocheting, and especially Tivaevae making. Growing up, I recall my mum being part of a group of talented women who came together to create beautiful and intricate Tivaevae. Even before her marriage, she began preparing her own Tivaevae—a tradition where the bride’s family contributes special household items as gifts to furnish the newlywed couple’s home, such as Tivaevae, furnishings, and furniture. This special offering is known as O’o’ra, and it is a significant part of the wedding celebration.
Mum’s strength was evident in everything she did. Our home was always s**c and span—immaculate and well-maintained. Before we had a washing machine, Mum would handwash all our clothes and iron them. There was never a pile of dirty clothes, and everything was washed, ironed, folded, and packed away with care. It is overwhelming to think of the dedication and love she put into caring for our family. We are very lucky children to have her as our mum.
Her core values were instilled in us all—values like hard work and not being afraid of it. Mum taught us the importance of dedication and responsibility, and those lessons have stayed with us for life. Every day in our home, there was morning and evening worship, a time to reflect on our faith and seeking God.
Mum also loved to entertain her friends, especially her mama friends. She always enjoyed bringing people together, creating a warm and welcoming space, and sharing love and laughter with those around her.
Mum was not only a dedicated wife and mother, but she was also an amazing cook and baker, known for her delicious meals and sweet treats. Her kitchen was always filled with the smells of home-cooked goodness, made with love and care. In addition to her creative talents, Mum had a deep love for gardening. Whether it was tending to her fruits and vegetables garden or maintaining her stunning flower garden, she brought life and beauty to her home.
Mum’s greatest love was for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. My two brothers had a special place in our mums heart. She cherished every moment spent with her family. But above all, Mum loved God deeply. Her faith guided her every step of the way, and she lived a life devoted to Him. Her greatest wish was to be reunited with her family in Heaven on that glorious day. What a joy and a moment of happy tears it will be when we are all able to hug Mum again in His presence.
Mum was part of a group of women who came together to create beautiful, intricate Tivaevae pieces. Each design was filled with love, patience, and attention to detail. Over the years, her Tivaevae won awards, but for her, it was always about the meaning behind each stitch and the love shared with those around her.
She was also a talented dressmaker, crochet artist, housewife, and farmer’s wife. Mum truly was someone who could do it all with grace, skill, and a deep love for her family. We are so thankful for the life she gave us and all the ways she shaped our world.
As we approach the one-year mark of Mum’s passing on 18th February 2024, I find myself reflecting on her life and the incredible legacy she left behind. I miss her dearly, and there are so many moments I wish I could have with her again—just to hug her one more time and tell her how much I love her.
Thank you, Mum. I love you. We love you.
Today, I along with my siblings, our children and grandchildren, honor her memory by sharing some of the beautiful Tivaevae she created with the world, ensuring her artistry, love, and the warmth she shared through her cooking, baking, gardening, remarkable patience, and most of all, her unwavering love for her family and God, live on. Rest till that glorious day mum.
AROA MOU!
