Kia orana e te iti tangata

I want to acknowledge a flyer that was recently shared by BTIB about our studio. Although I’m sure it was meant to help promote us, it included incorrect information and wasn’t checked with us beforehand.

The flyer also advertised our studio under the wrong name “Pacific Ink” even though we have proudly transitioned to Te ‘Are Tātatau, a space grounded in Cook Islands identity, lineage, and cultural responsibility.

It also used photos of my clients and appears to have been run through an AI generator. For us, this is especially important to address. Our studio does not support AI‑generated art.
Our work is built on human hands, cultural knowledge, lived experience, and relationships. Using our clients’ images in AI content without consent compromises not only our integrity, but theirs as well.
We do not offer piercing and we do not want contact made my messenger.
We have actually gone public about this and how people have been lead to being scammed by thinking they are talking to our artist in messenger.
All our bookings are done either in house or through the website Tatatau.com

This isn’t about blame. It’s about reminding ourselves as a community that when representing cultural work , especially work tied to identity, heritage, and people, accuracy and communication matter.

All in all we would have really appreciated to be contacted to send in our own poster. We are also nurturing young local graphic designers that could have utilized this opportunity. We know it was AI as all this information is generic Info available online, Tattoo & Piercing is a category in Facebook but have never advertised that service.

Pacific Ink is a name I've operated under for 2 decades now, but as a tattooist only. The studio name is Te 'Are Tatatau

Meitaki maata to everyone who continues to support Te ‘Are Tātatau and understands the value of protecting our stories, our artists, and the integrity of our craft

Kia orana e te katoatoa

Our studio opening last week was a quiet one, partly because we’ve been operating for months already, and partly because I honestly wasn’t sure what an “opening” was supposed to look like.
I kept putting it off, thinking it wasn’t a big deal… until it suddenly was.

What finally pushed me to bite the bullet was having our friends Lehua, Aunty Cece, and Kaleilani visiting from Hawai‘i Island. I realised that perfect timing didn’t matter, we would just open the doors and celebrate this space however it looked. And I’m so glad we did.

My friends Shane and Remiah turned up that afternoon, rolled up their sleeves, and helped prepare the studio before the crowd arrived that evening. Meitaki ma‘ata to you both, you carried me through a moment I didn’t even realise I needed support for.

And a huge shout out to my family Rudi, Levi, and Iaveta and our staff family Naomi and Sidney. You all showed up for our studio that night in the most genuine way. Every hand, every task, every bit of calm and chaos management… it meant everything. This space stands stronger because of you.

There were many people and small businesses I wish I had invited properly. If you’re one of them, please know it wasn’t intentional. A bit of imposter syndrome definitely played its part. This space means a lot to us, and sometimes that makes it harder to celebrate out loud.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our vaka, our artists, and this new home for our work.

This past year I’ve been doing this crazy thing and having weekends off, last year I took the day before and after Xmas off too but this year the crew have asked for the week off 🙃😮

It might not seem that unusual to most but when I began learning from my uncle one of the first things he said to me was
“you’re gonna need to build the stamina to work long hours all week, you need to keep up (with him)”

Now as I enter my kaiako era it’s one of the things I’ve chosen to unlearn and teach the squad to rest and keep the mental health on point 👌🏽

December is here and these will be our closed down periods for the next couple months

As many of you may have encountered we have Leviticus, working our admin and will be joining us full time come January 2025.

Please bare with her if appointments are scarce, she’s been an absolute blessing and as it turns out with efficiency comes even more booking inquires 😂 because last months analytics came back to say there were 1040 points of contact made via the website 😵‍💫

Popongi manea tātou

Our little studio has had an adjustment in hours
Please note not all artists are available at all hours but the physical studio is open during these hours.

The website is still the best way to make contact if you’re off the island, otherwise come in during these hours.

Meitaki ngao for all the support over the years be safe this festive season
