Wang Xue Sophia - China | is a visual artist working across photography, video, performance, and writing. Her practice explores cultural hybridity, bodily memory, and diasporic experience. With a background in journalism and fine arts, she engages with themes of otherness and intergenerational memory across multiethnic geographies, blending documentary and poetic strategies.

Henna

Raised in an interethnic family in northwest China, the daughter of a Hui Muslim mother and a Mongolian father - Sophia explores the "in-betweenness" of cultural identity. Her collection, Henna, centers on a foundational childhood ritual: her grandmother in Qinghai growing and mixing henna with tea to stain her nails crimson. This intimate act serves as both a lived memory and a powerful metaphor for Muslim womanhood and cultural continuity. Moving between the rural landscapes of her hometown and urban centers like Guangzhou, she documents how women navigate the delicate balance between tradition and modernity. Recurring motifs—red prayer mats, pink hijabs, and crimson dates—echo the symbolic color of henna, weaving a visual thread through portraits and landscapes. Rather than a linear history, Henna offers a sensory narrative of cultural hybridity, exploring the quiet resilience required to exist at the intersection of diverse worlds.

+i60 Abstract

"Retirement is one of the major life transitions, marking entry into a new phase shaped by financial, emotional, and social change. While retirement age varies across countries and professions, leaving work often affects identity, self-evaluation, and quality of life. Traditionally in Kenya, the extended family provided care and financial security for older generations. Today, urbanization, nuclear families, and global mobility are reshaping this social contract. As a result, retirement increasingly depends on individual preparation and coping skills.

This long-term project documents milestones in my parents’ retirement, examining how pre-retirement planning and emotional resilience influence happiness, dignity, and wellbeing in old age.”

Memory in Limbo

Inspired by General Dámaso Berenguer’s 1921 vow to use chemical weapons against Rifian civilians, Memory in Limbo explores Rifian identity through its "(post)colonial" landscape. The project serves as a vital record for a marginalized people, weaving together the photographer’s personal nostalgia with the stark reality of ongoing Spanish occupation—such as the nearby islands and the Badis land border. By intersecting historical trauma with the present environment, the work challenges the notion of a colonial "past," illustrating how this history remains visibly alive in the Al Hoceima region.
