MAI 36 GALERIE

MAI 36 GALERIE Mai 36 Galerie focuses on trading and presenting international contemporary art (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, film and installation).

Our exhibition program is directed at the works of artists preoccupied with the fundamental questions of art, beginning with significant statements of art after 1945, their roots going back to the sixties and seventies (especially Pop-Art, Minimal-Art and Conceptual-Art). We are mainly interested in artists engaged in unearthing art-immanent themes such as the perception of art, art as a form of c

ommunication, art as a system, as well as art questioning the importance and function of art in our society: the outlooks of individual artists stimulating and encouraging reflections on the experiences and perceptions of our age. We are intent on working in close collaboration with the artists and presenting their works continuously in individual exhibitions, publications and at the international art fairs of Basel, Madrid, London, New York and Miami Beach. We hold about six exhibitions a year, presenting both national and international artists and hope to surprise the cultural scene of Zurich with a number of interesting projects. Mai 36 Galerie sees itself as an address for both known and unknown artists and wants to encourage the exchange of individual exhibitions between an autonomous group of international galleries.

On View: Michel Pérez Pollo – Double Gaze Zurich Art Weekend

Gallery Breakfast
Sunday, June 14, 11 AM
Rämistrasse 37

In “Double Gaze”, Michel Perez proposes a game of resistance – one that challenges the viewer to seek out similarities and differences, tricks and devices, errors and accuracies, the fractal and imaginary possibilities of a matter that unfolds before us into two. Like twin souls that bifurcate, like the very beginning of a human embryo, when a single cell divides into two, and so on..

June 16-21

Peter Hujar and Paul Thek met on a road trip to Key West, Florida, in 1956 and remained deeply connected for 20 years. Their relationship was mythical and romantic, resisting easy categorization – a friendship and a love affair, a creative entanglement, marked as much by tension and rupture as by tenderness. They arrived in New York together and began making work that would resist every dominant current of its time: Thek with his wax sculptures, liturgical paintings, and works on newspaper whose fragile surfaces accumulated marks and images against the noise of the daily news; Hujar with his portraits, capturing his subjects with astonishing intimacy and vulnerability. In 1963, they traveled to Palermo and descended into the Capuchin Catacombs, in a visit that illuminated their own contemplation of mortality. The trip marked a defining moment in their practices. Both artists died of Aids within a year of each other, leaving behind bodies of work the world is still catching up with.
