MAI 36 GALERIE

Mai 36 Galerie focuses on trading and presenting international contemporary art (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, film and installation).

Our exhibition program is directed at the works of artists preoccupied with the fundamental questions of art, beginning with significant statements of art after 1945, their roots going back to the sixties and seventies (especially Pop-Art, Minimal-Art and Conceptual-Art). We are mainly interested in artists engaged in unearthing art-immanent themes such as the perception of art, art as a form of c

ommunication, art as a system, as well as art questioning the importance and function of art in our society: the outlooks of individual artists stimulating and encouraging reflections on the experiences and perceptions of our age. We are intent on working in close collaboration with the artists and presenting their works continuously in individual exhibitions, publications and at the international art fairs of Basel, Madrid, London, New York and Miami Beach. We hold about six exhibitions a year, presenting both national and international artists and hope to surprise the cultural scene of Zurich with a number of interesting projects. Mai 36 Galerie sees itself as an address for both known and unknown artists and wants to encourage the exchange of individual exhibitions between an autonomous group of international galleries.

Opening Today: Markus Saile - False Horizon

Markus Saile (b. 1981 in Stuttgart; lives and works in Cologne, Germany) presents, for the first time, large-scale works that approach, and at times almost exceed, the dimensions of the human body, emphasizing the painting’s function as its counterpart. Saile works with gestures of concealment and revelation whose dynamism and engagement with the picture field evoke cinematic procedures: the gaze is held back, redirected, then partially released and opened up again.

Opening Tomorrow: Hiroki Tsukuda - 𝒾𝓃𝒻𝑒𝓇𝓃𝑜

Hiroki Tsukuda (b. 1978 in Kagawa, lives and works in Sapporo, Japan) draws viewers into a world in which distinctions between the real and the fabricated, the digital and the handmade, begin to collapse. Tsukuda’s images seem at once excavated from an abandoned past and transmitted from a near future: speculative records of a civilisation looking back at the conditions of its own undoing.

Markus Saile’s first presentation with Mai 36 Galerie was “Edge to Edge”, back in 2022.

In “Edge to Edge”, Markus Saile’s works convened the space of painting in a subtle interplay between the space where it was situated, the space it represented, and the space it constructed in dialogue with architecture. Beyond the in-situ and the context, it was an investigation into painting in volume, the depth of the surface, and the extension of this practice into a performative field of action.

“Some Exact Distance To The Sun”, 2022 by Raphael Hefti.

Santorini, Greece

In “Some Exact Distance To The Sun”, 605 square meters of Cycladic terracing get enthusiastically ribboned with color, rudely interrupting the otherwise well-behaved chalkiness. A runway into the mirage of sky and sea, whitewash and heat, the whole thing stumbles, splinters, and generally refuses to follow the rules of polite architecture. Its exact distance from a celestial marker is unknowable, yet it constantly invites reconsideration of its lines and their interruptions. In the tension between fading and pigment, we measure, trace, search—and approximate.
