"From B to Z: Artists Connecting Belgrade and Zagreb"
February 26 – March 26, 2021
After five years exploring and promoting the Serbian art scene, Laufer Gallery is expanding its scope to Croatia and beyond. One of the defining features of these emerging artists is the use of figuration. Yugoslav artists from the 60s to 2000s made headlines by exploring performance and abstraction, all framed in theoretical and ideological discourses. The new generation however is markedly returning to figuration with any means necessary. Concepts are discarded, or at least tuned down, in favour of an avid exploration of reality - real, or imagined. Landscapes, portraits, architecture, myths and symbols are brought to the fore using resolutely contemporary emotions. That is what connects artists from Belgrade and Zagreb and throughout the whole region. The works of Miran Sabic, Grgur Akrap, Dragan Bibin and Veroljub Naumovic are successfully redefining classical forms of expression. In a geographic space that has been profoundly changed according to arbitrary criteria, these artists offer ways to look beyond these transient forms, into a deeper, more sustainable reality.
Though they were born in the same country, Yugoslavia, these artists are now shaping their young countries, Croatia and Serbia, into European artistic powerhouses. This show means to explore what they share and what connects them, as well as their distinctive voices and identities
