Celebrating 40 years of Swiss Institute, Regift revisits the landmark 2009 exhibition originally organised at SI New York by John Miller with Piper Marshall.

Co-produced by Swiss Institute and Luma Foundation, the exhibition brings together more than 50 artists across two floors of Luma Westbau, exploring the enduring significance of gift exchange, reciprocity, and systems of value.

From rituals of giving to forms of social, cultural, and economic exchange, Regift reflects on how acts of generosity shape relationships across communities and generations.

Living with art stops one wilting!

Dedicated to the pioneering Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919–2014), who was born in rural southern Austria and pursued a remarkable 70-year career spanning painting, drawing and animated film.

For the first time, the exhibition brings together the complete series of conversations between Lassnig and Hans Ulrich Obrist, alongside their correspondence, as well as selected watercolours and two landmark films: ‘The Ballad of Maria Lassnig’ (1992) and ‘Selfportrait’ (1971).

The exhibition takes its title from the final sentence Lassnig wrote to Obrist in her last unfinished letter: “Living with art stops one wilting!”—a fitting tribute to an artist whose work continues to resonate today.

KUNST ZU MITTAG

Join art mediator Olena Iegorova for a free lunchtime guided tour of the current exhibitions at Luma Westbau.

The visit begins on the first floor (schwarzescafé / Luma Westbau) with the latest chapter of the Hans Ulrich Obrist Archives dedicated to the pioneering Austrian artist Maria Lassnig. Bringing together paintings, drawings, films and archival material, the presentation traces Lassnig’s radical exploration of bodily perception, self-awareness and artistic experimentation across more than seven decades of practice.

The tour continues on the second and third floors with REGIFT – 40 Years of Swiss Institute New York, a major anniversary exhibition co-produced by the Swiss Institute and the LUMA Foundation. Originally conceived in 2009 by curators John Miller and Piper Marshall, the project has been reactivated as a reflection on four decades of the Swiss Institute’s curatorial practice. Expanding on themes of gift exchange, reciprocity and systems of value, the exhibition unfolds as a layered constellation of more than fifty artists across generations and geographies, highlighting the Swiss Institute’s role as a platform for experimentation and transatlantic exchange.

LUMA presents the launch of ‘Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication’, a new publication by Peter Fischli, produced by LUMA Foundation and Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König.

More than a documentation of Fischli’s exhibition ‘People Planet Profit’ at LUMA Arles (2025), the book unfolds as a dense, filmstrip-like sequence of images. Captured on Fischli’s phone, a kaleidoscopic flow of images chronicles the exhibition while reflecting on the signs and systems that shape contemporary life. The publication examines how the symbols and infrastructures of capitalism vie for attention and structure perception, revealing a world in constant, dizzying flux.

To mark the launch, Peter Fischli will be in conversation with writer Dr Caitlín Doherty, followed by a book signing.

Studio of the South is a new publication produced by LUMA Foundation and JRP Editions, based on the residency programme in Arles developed with artist Laura Owens.

The book traces the Studio of the South residency (2020–2023), which brought together 23 international artists to live and work in a shared house in Arles. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s vision of artistic community, the project explored the home as a space for artistic production, collaboration and exchange.

To mark the launch, Laura Owens will be joined by Bice Curiger, Miriam Laura Leonardi and Gabriele Garavaglia for a conversation moderated by Julie Boukobza, followed by a book signing.

REGIFT: On Gifting, Mutual Obligation and Economies of Circulation

Join artists John Miller and Nina Beier in conversation with Stefanie Hessler, Director of Swiss Institute, and Alison Coplan, Chief Curator of Swiss Institute, in dialogue with the exhibition Regift at Luma Westbau.

Marking Swiss Institute’s 40th anniversary, the discussion reflects on gift exchange, reciprocity, and economies of circulation, exploring how practices of giving and receiving shape artistic production, institutional histories, and broader systems of value.

The conversation will be followed by a performance by artist Raúl de Nieves. Performing under the alias of La Mosca, Raúl de Nieves embodies a shifting figure that moves between innocence, decay, transformation, and transcendence.

Hans Ulrich Obrist Archives continues with a new chapter dedicated to the pioneering Austrian artist Maria Lassnig.

Born in rural southern Austria, Lassnig developed a 70 year practice spanning painting, drawing and animation, centred on her radical idea of body awareness and the interior life of perception.

For the first time this presentation brings together the complete series of video interviews between Lassnig and Obrist, alongside their extensive correspondence, arranged in chronological order. Featured works include selected watercolours shown in Athens as well as The Ballad of Maria Lassnig (1992) and Selfportrait (1971), highlighting her pioneering role in animation within the feminist art scene of 1970s New York.

Echoing her final unfinished letter to Obrist dated 11 January 2014, “Living with art stops one wilting!”, the exhibition traces a vivid legacy in which inner vision becomes both method and resistance.
