WORK WORK WORK

We are back on track with a fresh new cycle dedicated to the working class and the films that have emerged from it!

The screenings will take place, as usual, at the CAB building (ETH Zentrum) and will begin at 19:30. This semester, we are also continuing our collaborations with local cinemas, with two screenings taking place at Filmpodium Zürich and one at Kinos Riffraff/Houdini — details coming soon.

Here is part of the concept behind the theme:
Whether it be a kitchen in New York, a rice field in Italy, or a factory in the Soviet Union, these places are united by their depictions of hierarchies between employers and employees, and of people’s struggle to earn a living wage. As director B**g Joon Ho once succinctly put it: “Essentially we all live in the same country called capitalism.”

The result is a series of bizarre spaces, like the supermarket in The Store, the office in Clockwatchers, and the amusement park in The World.

In these spaces, the characters become an interchangeable human resource. A workplace injury here, a lay-off there — it’s only a matter of time before the workers fall into crisis, or unite and revolt. In some films they do so quietly; in others, not so much.

Work, however, is more than just a fight for survival. The films in this program also show how tightly work is tied to community, identity, and purpose.

You will see a pastor lose his faith and injured factory workers inspire newfound belief. You will see friendships made and families undone. You will see scientists at the end of the world and immigrants at the start of a new life.

See you at Filmstelle!

One last dance before the end: THE BLUES BROTHERS!

🎞️ A man dressed entirely in black — suit, combat boots, belt, hat, and sunglasses — leaves prison. Outside, his brother is waiting for him, dressed identically.
Jake and Elwood, the former frontmen of the Blues Brothers, learn that the orphanage where they grew up is facing closure and that they must raise 5,000 dollars within a few days. Their solution: to reunite the old band and organize a sold-out concert. From that moment on, they are “on a mission from God.”

Take a cameraman and let him follow one of the greatest contemporary composers in the world for five years. The result is a mesmerizing, intimate, and surprisingly funny portrait of a musical genius; a rare glimpse into the life, mind, and everyday humanity behind the music. Do you know what we prefer to watching one film? Watching two films!

Next week we’ll focus on electronic music. First, we’ll screen one of the most impressive documentaries on the subject, featuring rare footage straight from the genre’s golden age. After that, we’ll see how music can be transformed into images through Japanese drawing and animation. Between the two movies we’ll have a 15 minutes break.

🎞️ MODULATIONS (75 min) is an encyclopedia of electronic music in almost every form, from Detroit techno and house music to Berlin nightclubs, as well as more experimental noise and ambient styles. Through a collection of interviews and dancefloor footage documenting the scene’s most important movements and their origins, you learn as much about the culture as you do about discovering new tracks from the soundtrack that you simply can’t stop dancing to.

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (65 min) is a visual album — a film entirely built around the music of an album — created by Leiji Matsumoto in collaboration with Daft Punk. The movie tells the story of an alien pop band kidnapped by a human producer and turned into global stars on Earth, all set to the entirety of Daft Punk’s album Discovery.

The hidden story of decolonization, told to the rhythm of jazz: SOUNDTRACK TO A COUP D’ETAT at Filmstelle

🎞️ When the Congo gained its independence under Patrice Lumumba in 1960, he became a target of the CIA and the Belgian colonial power, which sought to destabilize the country. This Franco-Belgian-Dutch documentary by Belgian director Johan Grimonprez recounts the decolonization of the Congo in the 1960s and the role that Black jazz music played in it. The CIA used this music as a weapon, sending musicians like Louis Armstrong to the Congo to reinforce Western control. This story sparked intense debates at the United Nations, which play a prominent role in the documentary.
