RISO AMARO!

How an Italian film from the ’40s about rice farmers can be such a banger and still feel this fresh is a small mystery.

🎞️ In Northern Italy, each year in May, hundreds of women gather to work the rice plains. The rice workers come from all across Italy, with all kinds of regular jobs. Among them are Francesca, a dreamer who would much rather be a dancer than a rice girl, and Silvana, who joins the rice workers spontaneously to escape the police, after her boyfriend Walter needs to hide the jewels he stole. At the barracks next to the rice fields Francesca and Silvana encounter Marco, a handsome sergeant who was stationed there with the army. We follow these characters over the 40 day long season of work, and the ensuing struggles of legality, loyalty and love.

LA COCINA

After the open-air, it’s time to kick off our regular program at CAB! We’re starting with a high-cortisol movie, where working in a restaurant kitchen feels more like going to the battlefield than going to work.

🎞️ One day behind the scenes at The Grill, a high-pressure kitchen in Times Square where the staff work at a relentless pace, the employees—most of them without legal residency status—churn out one order after another, hoping that one day they will be able to leave this place. Meanwhile, they nurture dreams of their own as they struggle to keep their jobs and maintain a sense of dignity. But when $800 disappears from the cash register, the restaurant’s fragile balance begins to crumble. Long-simmering racial tensions erupt, mistrust spreads like wildfire, and the kitchen is transformed into a gripping thriller.

New program starts this tuesday!

🎞️ One day in the backstage of “The Grill,” a high-pressured Times Square kitchen operating at a relentless pace. The employees, mostly undocumented, churn out order after order in hopes of leaving this place one day. Meanwhile, they nurture their own dreams trying to hold their jobs and retain a sense of dignity. But when 800 dollars vanishes from the register, the restaurant’s fragile equilibrium shatters.

Restless like The Bear and nerve-wracking like Boiling Point, La cocina delivers a breathless depiction of kitchen work, mixing it intelligently with complex multicultural turmoil and biting critique of the American Dream. A perfect opening to this semester’s cycle!

OPEN-AIR-STELLE RETURNS! 🎞️

Over three days we will take you on different journeys all the way from the magical land of Oz to dystopian deserts of the future. Kick off the new semester with the following three films:

September 15 – THE WIZARD OF OZ, dir. Victor Fleming, 1939 👠
September 16 – WHERE IS THE FRIEND’S HOUSE?, dir. Abbas Kiarostami, 1987 📔
September 17 – MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, dir. George Miller, 2015 🏜️
All films will be shown in their original language with English subtitles.

Irchel Campus, Winterthurerstrasse 174. We open at 19:00. The films start at sunset (around 19:45). Food and drinks will be available for a low price at the bar.

WORK WORK WORK

We are back on track with a fresh new cycle dedicated to the working class and the films that have emerged from it!

The screenings will take place, as usual, at the CAB building (ETH Zentrum) and will begin at 19:30. This semester, we are also continuing our collaborations with local cinemas, with two screenings taking place at Filmpodium Zürich and one at Kinos Riffraff/Houdini — details coming soon.

Here is part of the concept behind the theme:
Whether it be a kitchen in New York, a rice field in Italy, or a factory in the Soviet Union, these places are united by their depictions of hierarchies between employers and employees, and of people’s struggle to earn a living wage. As director B**g Joon Ho once succinctly put it: “Essentially we all live in the same country called capitalism.”

The result is a series of bizarre spaces, like the supermarket in The Store, the office in Clockwatchers, and the amusement park in The World.

In these spaces, the characters become an interchangeable human resource. A workplace injury here, a lay-off there — it’s only a matter of time before the workers fall into crisis, or unite and revolt. In some films they do so quietly; in others, not so much.

Work, however, is more than just a fight for survival. The films in this program also show how tightly work is tied to community, identity, and purpose.

You will see a pastor lose his faith and injured factory workers inspire newfound belief. You will see friendships made and families undone. You will see scientists at the end of the world and immigrants at the start of a new life.
