We’re slowly coming out of summer break and want to share our busy September schedule!

From September 4th to 5th, we’ll be at New England Art Book Fair at SPACE gallery in Portland, Maine. We’ll then head to Canada and our favorite art book fair in a church for from September 11th to 12th. Please come say hi if you’re in the area!

This September is our first ever workshop in Massachusetts in collaboration with Arnoldia at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum of Harvard In our workshop on Sunday the 20th “Stories Among the Trees,” we’ll bind small booklets and take a walk around the Arboretum listening to Arnoldia writers (including our own Earth contributor and Harvard researcher, Aaron Ellison!) share their essays on the trees we’ll be standing under. We’ll also guide participants through a reflective writing and drawing session at the end of the workshop. You can find the link to sign up in our bio.

Since the Arboretum workshop is members only, we’ll be hosting a free public workshop at Rachel’s project space, Airtight Garage in Salem on Saturday, September 19th. We’ll be sharing more details about that workshop and how to sign up soon.

Save the date! To celebrate our newest book, Earth, an anthology that bridges scientific thought and community action, we will host a second seed bomb workshop on the afternoon of June 27th near Prospect Park.

Inspired by the Green Guerillas, participants make the seed balls while sharing stories of their memories of planting through short writing prompts and story sharing. During the walk around the neighborhood where we scatter the seed balls, we also map their placement in a public app, so that anyone can go back to the spot and know what might be growing there. The event is free and open to all.

In the final essay of our anthology, Most Beautiful Flower, Olga Bubich writes about her grandmother’s pragmatic approach to cultivation after a childhood under Stalin’s agricultural reform. Despite experiencing a policy which led to famine, Bubich shares her grandparents’ joy in and dedication to tending to their land and to their aloe, the only flower with enough utility to endear itself to them.

Olga Bubich is a former ICORN Fellow originally from Belarus now based in Berlin. She is an essayist with the focus on the subject of memory, visual artist, lecturer, and the author of two photobooks and one book of short prose.

“Perhaps to the woodlands where they’ll turn me
into a monster, or a viscera sucker, where
I learn the shapes of fear and flight,
and long to return to the body I abandoned.

Maybe there, I’ll learn to rise.”

In the tension described by Dr. Cindy Velasquez, the challenge of becoming is a constant in relation to land. Earth includes and creates community, and it vastly transforms. As a Cebuano poet, Velasquez, through the adroit translations by Alton Melvar M. Dapanas, intones mellifluous language that reads like song. Longing shows through in an attempt to understand and be understood by another, D**g, but also a longing to become self as exemplified in this excerpt. On a boat, in a woodland, on a drifting continent, the poems are gems in the Earth anthology.

Cindy A. Velasquez, PhD is a professor at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Philippines. She
has edited the anthology Dagat ug Kinabuhi: Translating Contemporary Cebuano Poetry (Sea and
Life) and wrote an illustrated children’s book series on the ethnomedicinal practices and knowledge of the
indigenous Ati community in eastern Cebu Province. Her first book Lawas (Body) was published in
2016, while her second one, Your Soul is Home: A Collection of Photo Haiku in Tokyo and
Yamagata, was released in 2022. Translated by Alton Melvar M. Dapanas into English, her works
appeared in Asymptote, Jill! A Women+ in Translation Reading Series, and The Oxford Anthology of
Translation, and forthcoming from Modern Poetry in Translation and Channel Magazine.

Alton Melvar M Dapanas (they/them), essayist, poet, and translator from the southern Philippines, is the author of M of the Southern Downpours (Australia: Downingfield Press, 2024), In the Name of the Body: Lyric Essays (Canada: Wrong Publishing, 2023), and Towards a Theory on City Boys: Prose Poems (UK: Newcomer Press, 2021).

The ocean has a sense of deep time from the vantage of a son exploring a beach with his mother. Through sharp storytelling and scientific research, Kelly Clancy weaves a personal essay all about horseshoe crabs: how their blue, their survival, and their humble lives inform and sustain a range of species.

Through this meditation, she gestures into immensity, and includes us, humankind, in it through love. The immensity of love is simultaneously real and tangible between a mother and her son.

Kelly Clancy is a Brooklyn-based writer and editor focused on politics and culture. She is the author of two books, Democracy: A Love Letter (2024) and The Politics of GMOS in the United States and Europe (2015) and a variety of outlets including The Thread and Oh Reader, as well as academic outlets.

We’ll be joined by most of our truly talented contributors from this anthology, with readings from Azucena Sanchez, Ebba Zajmi, Eric Zeigler, Kelly Clancy, Monisha Raman, Olga Bubich, Ravneet Kaur, and Wailea Zülch who will be joining us from locations across the country and the world.

This anthology is the first of three publications that share personal narratives about the natural world that link to scientific thought and community action.

In her nonlinear essay, Soil Sensing, Wailea Zülch explores mushrooms through social, biological, and philosophical lenses inspired by the research from her art practice MushRoom, an immersive communal art practice that looks to engage in the liberating and deeply connected nature of mycelia. Mushrooms lead us off the page into essayistic diversions detailed in line illustrations by Carola Wille.

The writing, organized into six rearrangeble cards, is meant to be read in any way and in any order to encourage surprising relationships between the fungal topics.

Wailea Zülch works in the field of futures studies as a curator and writer, operating at the intersections of analysis and imagination, time and space. With a background shaped by transit across cultures and disciplines, she explores themes of interconnection, rootedness, and transformation through multisensory, transdisciplinary approaches. Her work often bridges the abstract and the tangible, with a strong focus on emerging narratives.

Carola Wille is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Stockholm and Stuttgart.

Interrupting our writer and artist features to announce our upcoming event and book fair dates!

We’ll launch the anthology with an online reading with our diverse and far flung group of contributors joining from different parts of the world on Saturday, May 16 at 10am ET. We'll post more event details in the next week, and you can find the Zoom link on our Linktree.

We’ll then kick off our European art book fair tour at from May 22-24, join the mini fair at Löwenbräu Kunst for Zurich Art Weekend on June 13th, and head to for the week of the 14th which is partnering with .social.club at a new location. Niki from will be sharing a table with us at I Never Read and will bring our books to the in Paris the weekend of June 26th.

We are planning an in person event in NYC that same weekend, but will share more details soon! Hope to see some of you at these events

In a true ode to trees and roots, Eric Zeigler and Aaron Ellison’s monumental series of photographs and accompanying essay invites the reader into the places where soil meets plant, where air meets deep time, and where decay gives way to growth. Their images include both visible and infrared light exposures which meditate on the many facets of the natural world.

Eric Zeigler is Associate Professor of Art at the University of Toledo. His research and artistic practice interrogate the underpinnings of the history of the photographic process by purposefully exploiting problematic contemporary Western cultural categorizations and presumptions that are placed on photographic and lens-based imagery.

Aaron Ellison is a Boston-based photographer, sculptor, writer, and Senior Research Fellow Emeritus in Ecology at Harvard University. His research and artistic practice focus on the disintegration and reassembly of ecosystems following natural and anthropogenic disturbances.

Eric + Aaron work together through scientific writing and photography to explore unknown worlds beyond our current understanding. Their joint work currently centers on non anthropocentric/posthumanist aesthetics and creative photodocumentation of forests and deep time. Their most recent photo-book is instability: Photographs of the Unexpected (Snap Collective, 2024).
