The current inaugural issue of Eisenbricht berichtet shows conclusively that the complexities of waiting mean that its meaning ultimately remains inconclusive. The previous volume N° 1.2 discussed the political-philosophical potentialities that inhere in waiting. The work presented in volume N° 1.3 thematizes the terrifying implications waiting can acquire.

The collaborative work of the photographer Konrad Dobrucki and the scholars of Eastern Europe Gunilla Wallertz and Petra Zürcher presents the material-memorial dimensions of waiting in the context of war. Dobrucki’s photographic series Layers/Warstwy, taken in the first half of 2022, depicts the war-time efforts to preserve public monuments and memorial sites as well as their effects on the architectural landscape in Ukraine. The accompanying text by Wallertz and Zürcher eloquently discusses the politics of memory, preservation, and concealment that the images capture so impressively. Together, they provide an artistic and essayistic attempt to make sense of the horrors of war in their historical, cultural and architectural contexts.

Konrad Dobrucki ( ) was born in 1991 in Poland. He completed MA studies in philosophy at the University of Warsaw and is currently studying Photography at the University of Arts in Poznań. He is also a graduate of Sputnik Photos Mentoring Programme 2020/2021. In his artistic work, he focuses on documentary photography, using mainly analog techniques. With his photographs, he describes the state of the human condition through the prism of their surroundings, architecture, and habits.

Gunilla Wallertz and Petra Zürcher study Eastern European Studies at the Universities of Bern and Fribourg, for their Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees, respectively. They have studied the situation in Ukraine extensively both historically and in terms of current events.

Have you been waiting for the conversation to begin?
The concept of waiting can be elusive, yet there are moments when it takes on a tangible form, as demonstrated by Marius Fischer and Eero Karjalainen. Although each of them initially submitted a text, we recognized the potential for a more engaging dialogue between them. Consequently, they collaborated in a chat-like exchange to produce an entirely new contribution to this issue. The resulting text delves into the enigmatic nature of waiting, which often lingers unnoticed yet remains a constant in our lives. Utilizing documenta fifteen as a prominent example, their dialogue oscillates between reflection and disruption, mirroring the gradual start and sudden end of their conversation.

Marius Fischer (he/him) studied cultural studies, art theory and philosophy in Lüneburg and Leipzig and at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he currently lives.

Eero Karjalainen (he/him) ( )
is a critic based in Helsinki. Currently, he is interested in the intersection of cosmotechnics, the spatialization of writing, and infrastructural critique. Karjalainen has graduated from the University of Helsinki, majoring in aesthetics, and currently studies theory of contemporary art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki.

Waiting game
In 2020, during the Infrared residency organized by Foundation Shtatëmbëdhjetë in Pristina, Kosovo, Renea Begolli created the "Waiting Game." Through the medium of video, she explores the concept of human rights and her role as a Kosovo citizen, facing restrictions on freedom of movement that have resulted in a lasting sense of isolation.

Initially, the artwork took the form of a tent, symbolizing a childhood memory tied to eagerly awaiting shared playtime with a sibling. This memory became intricately connected to Renea Begolli's current experience of waiting, prompting questions such as, "Does the body remain ensnared in a perpetual state of waiting? Can it truly progress when the tangible symbol of waiting is no longer present?"

Renea Begolli (she/her) ( ) is a visual artist, researcher, and curator who explores body and identity with a sociological eye, as well as memory, isolation and ecology, which she expresses mainly through paintings, digital drawings, installations and video art. She complemented her painting studies at the Faculty of Arts at University of Prishtina ( a semester of sociology and social anthropology at Bournemouth University. She has subsequently conducted research at the Oral History Initiative and worked as a co-curator for the Kosovo Secondary Archive.

What is a text, is a text, if not only a text, but more of a tapestry woven from countless references. Performing a poetic exploration of the intricate concept of waiting, Maria Arzt's essay grinds down other texts and itself, thereby exposing – what exactly?

Contemplating the stark contrast of stale daily routines and the death and catastrophe encountered in news images, the text delves into the profound manner in which waiting allows us to engage with temporality and death.

Creative possibility in the present is sketched, drawing on Walter Benjamin's notion of a “weak messianic power”, Guy Debord's critique of spectacle calling for experimentation and on “revolutionary time”, a temporal model introduced by F***y Söderback, relying on notions of difference and change in the works of Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva – in a boundless undertaking of “making space for the future” and a differing of times.

Throughout the text, the author artfully entwines ideas and viewpoints, prompting us to reevaluate our relationship with time, waiting and possibilities that may await us there.

Maria Arzt (she/they) ( ) is an artist with a background in care work and social science. Maria is currently working with language, space, object, and co-runs the project space “Circa 106” ( )in Bremen, where she also studies Fine Arts at the University of the Arts.

Ein Open Call wäre kein richtiger Open Call, wenn er nicht mindestens einmal verlängert werden würde. Neu gilt daher der 30. Mai!

An Open Call would not be a true Open Call if it was not extended at least once. Therefore, the new deadline is May 30!

*Vorverkauf*
