Igot Stravinsky was so delighted he “spilled his scotch in ecstasy” when he realised..!
Charlie Parker was playing at one of New York's most famous jazz clubs when he looked into the audience.
Sitting there was Igor Stravinsky—one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century, and a musician Parker deeply admired.
Instead of acknowledging him with a wave or introducing him from the stage, Bird did something only Bird would think to do.
He began weaving little references to The Rite of Spring into his solo. Tiny melodic and rhythmic nods that only one person in the room was guaranteed to recognise.
Stravinsky recognised them immediately.
According to the story later repeated by writer Alex Ross and others, he became so excited that he "spilled his Scotch in ecstasy"
Whether or not every detail has grown in the retelling, one thing is beyond doubt: the admiration between Parker and Stravinsky was real.
Bird loved Stravinsky's music and Stravinsky, in turn, was fascinated by bebop.
It's one of those wonderful moments that reminds us jazz and classical music have never been as far apart as people sometimes imagine.
