What happens when a $450 million collection enters the market?

Sotheby’s has secured the Blaquier collection, an extraordinary group of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works estimated at around $450 million.

The collection includes major works by some of the most established names in art history, including Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro.
But beyond the individual masterpieces, the sale could become an important test for the current art market.

After a period marked by greater selectivity and caution among collectors, the arrival of a collection of this scale has the potential to reveal how much demand remains at the very top of the market.

Because major collections do more than generate auction records.
When they return to the market, they can influence prices, redefine benchmarks and offer a snapshot of where collectors are willing to place value today.

GREATER NEW YORK 2026 | MoMA PS1

What does it mean to make art in New York today?

For its sixth edition, Greater New York takes over MoMA PS1 with more than 150 works by 53 artists and collectives living and working across the city.

Rather than attempting to define a single New York art scene, the exhibition reflects a fragmented and constantly evolving cultural landscape.

Painting, photography, installation, animation and performance come together to explore some of the forces shaping contemporary life: accelerating technologies, surveillance, social instability and the ways individuals and communities adapt to them.

The result is less a portrait of a city than a snapshot of a particular moment.
Perhaps the most interesting question is not what New York art looks like today, but what artists can tell us about the city before the rest of us are able to see it.

ES DEVLIN 🇬🇧

Born in the United Kingdom, Es Devlin has redefined the relationship between art, architecture and performance through immersive environments that transform the way audiences experience space.

MARK ROTHKO | Florence

This summer, Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi presents one of the most important exhibitions ever dedicated to Mark Rothko in Italy.

Rather than offering a traditional retrospective, Rothko in Florence creates a dialogue between the artist’s iconic paintings and the city that deeply influenced his vision.
Spanning Palazzo Strozzi, the Biblioteca Laurenziana and the Museo di San Marco, the exhibition explores the relationship between Rothko’s luminous fields of color and the spiritual intensity of Renaissance art.

The exhibition reminds us that Rothko’s paintings are not simply meant to be seen. They are meant to be experienced.
Standing in front of his work means slowing down, embracing silence and allowing color to become emotion rather than representation.

When a private collection changes the future of a museum

Can a private collection reshape the role of a museum?
In San Diego, the answer seems to be yes.

Giants, the exhibition built around the collection of Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, has welcomed more than 25,000 visitors, becoming the most visited exhibition in the history of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

Bringing together over 130 works by 37 Black artists, the exhibition highlights how private collectors are increasingly influencing museum programming while giving greater visibility to voices that have long been underrepresented.

Today, collecting is no longer just about acquiring artworks.
It is becoming an active way to shape cultural narratives, expand institutional perspectives and redefine what museums choose to present to the public.

SARAH SZE 🇺🇸

Chi guida un museo oggi non definisce soltanto un programma espositivo. Definisce anche la direzione culturale di un’intera istituzione.

In questi giorni la Tate ha annunciato la nomina di Jessica Morgan come nuova direttrice, dopo oltre dieci anni alla guida della Dia Art Foundation di New York. Arriva in un momento cruciale, tra la necessità di rilanciare il pubblico, rafforzare la sostenibilità economica e ripensare il ruolo di uno dei più importanti musei d’arte contemporanea al mondo.

La notizia, però, va oltre il semplice cambio di leadership.

Sempre più spesso il futuro delle istituzioni culturali dipende dalla capacità di trovare un equilibrio tra identità curatoriale, sostenibilità economica e rilevanza sociale. Oggi un direttore non è chiamato soltanto a costruire mostre, ma anche a sviluppare relazioni, attrarre nuove generazioni di visitatori, creare partnership e immaginare modelli culturali capaci di evolvere insieme alla società.

Per questo motivo, la scelta di una nuova direzione rappresenta molto più di un passaggio di consegne: è un’indicazione su come un museo intende affrontare le sfide dei prossimi anni.

La domanda, quindi, non è soltanto chi guiderà la Tate, ma quale idea di museo emergerà da questa nuova fase.

L’ARTE PUÒ FINANZIARE IL FUTURO?

Nei giorni scorsi Sotheby’s ha annunciato una collaborazione con l’Estate di Virgil Abloh: una selezione di stampe rare dell’artista e designer sarà messa in vendita per finanziare borse di studio universitarie dedicate a giovani creativi.

Un’operazione che utilizza il mercato come strumento di sostegno alla formazione delle nuove generazioni.

La questione interessante riguarda però un tema più ampio.

Per anni il mercato dell’arte è stato raccontato soprattutto attraverso record d’asta e performance finanziarie. Oggi iniziano ad affermarsi modelli in cui collezionismo, filantropia e impatto culturale convivono all’interno dello stesso progetto.

L’opera continua a essere un bene culturale e patrimoniale, ma diventa anche un mezzo attraverso cui finanziare ricerca, istruzione e nuove opportunità per artisti e professionisti del futuro.

La domanda allora cambia: il successo di un’opera si misurerà solo dal suo prezzo o anche dalla capacità di generare valore oltre il mercato?

Il futuro dei musei potrebbe non dipendere solo da ciò che conservano, ma anche da ciò che scelgono di restituire.

Lo scorso 21 giugno i Paesi Bassi hanno ufficialmente restituito alla Nigeria 119 Benin Bronzes, una delle più importanti operazioni di restituzione culturale degli ultimi anni. Le opere, trafugate nel 1897 durante la spedizione militare britannica nel Regno del Benin, torneranno ora sotto la gestione del governo nigeriano.

La questione interessante riguarda però un tema più ampio.

La restituzione delle opere non rappresenta soltanto un atto simbolico o diplomatico, ma sta ridefinendo il ruolo stesso delle istituzioni culturali. Musei, fondazioni e collezioni sono sempre più chiamati a confrontarsi con temi quali provenienza, responsabilità storica e accessibilità del patrimonio.

In questo scenario, il valore di un’opera non si misura più esclusivamente attraverso criteri economici o storici, ma anche attraverso la sua capacità di generare nuove relazioni culturali e sociali.

La domanda non è più se assisteremo ad altre restituzioni, ma come queste trasformeranno il sistema dell’arte nei prossimi decenni.

MARCO MAZZUCCONI 🇮🇹

Born in Italy, Mazzucconi develops a multidisciplinary practice that moves between painting, installation and sculpture, exploring the relationship between matter, gesture and transformation.

At the centre of his research is the idea that every surface contains the possibility of change. Through processes of layering, alteration and reconstruction, his works investigate concepts such as error, fragility, memory and renewal.

Rather than seeking perfection, Mazzucconi embraces uncertainty as an active element of the creative process. Materials are manipulated, interrupted and reconfigured, allowing the work to evolve through a continuous dialogue between control and unpredictability.

His practice has been presented in exhibitions, artist residencies and interdisciplinary projects, establishing a research that reflects on transformation not as an exception, but as a fundamental condition of both art and life.
