Composition of the Week #4

"Meteor Shower" is a short piece by composer Silas Schmid that depicts the final moments of meteoroids before they burn up in Earth's atmosphere, creating a beautiful phenomenon known as a meteor shower. Despite the name, these events are not caused by large meteors, but by a cloud of small meteoroids ranging in size from a grain of sand to a small pebble.
The composition consists of three interconnected movements.

100 Years of Caspar Diethelm

Swiss composer Caspar Diethelm would have turned 100 on 31. March 2026. His extensive body of work includes several pieces for brass band and wind band.
At the height of his career at the Lucerne Conservatory , he also composed various chamber music works for brass instruments.
Lucerne Music Edition - Quality Music for Bands will be publishing various works during this anniversary year.

CMA Brass Band Composition Competition in Austria

We are extremely proud to announce that two of the top three winners are composers from our publishing house.
The international jury, comprising Dorothy Gates (USA), Charlotte Bray (UK) and Andreas Ziegelbäck (Austria), among others, has selected the following prize-winners:

Berserkerkangr : Zeno Schmidiger
Japanese Impressions: Hitoshi Takahashi

The works will be premiered on 25 September 2026 by the Brass Band Oberösterreich as part of the ‘Carinthischer Brass Herbst’ festival in Ossiach.

Among the 10 finalists were two further composers from Lucerne Music Edition - Quality Music for Bands Music Edition –, whose works have already been published by us or are due to be published.

Warm congratulations also to Silas Schmid and Nadine Mülhauser.

Composition of the Week #3

With "Japanese Quince," young Japanese composer Hitoshi Takahashi has attempted to combine characteristics of Japanese music with elements of European music. He uses typical pentatonic scales in his melodies and combines them with groove-based rhythms.

This 36th installment of suggested repertoire is proposed by Felix Hauswirth who studied theory and wind orchestra conducting at the Lucerne Conservatory and continued his education in the USA.

Composition of the Week #2

Fancy some blues? We continue the series with the composition “The Builders Blues” by LME co-founder Stephan Hodel.

Composed in 2021/22 for the 125th anniversary of the Swiss Builders Association, it was premiered by the “Baumeister Brass Band,” an ad hoc band made up of people from the construction industry. The blues form seemed very appropriate for this composition. The work consists of three parts: the blues itself, a jazzy ballad with solos on flugelhorn and euphonium, and a fast finale that brings back the hammering motif.

With “New Horizons” by Swiss composer Dominic Frank, we are launching our “Composition of the Week” series, in which we will be introducing our composers and their works.

Dominic composed the opening piece, New Horizons, for the Swiss military brass band RS 16-1/20. It is an opening work full of energy and youthful spirit.
