Around this sudden drop in the river Reuss flowing out of the Vierwaldstätte Lake in Lucerne, which I drew and painted in 2017 in my Luzern sketch book I do believe that Lucerne began, in the stone age I surmise. Of course it must have looked quite different then. No bridges, no cafés, no churches, no galant ferry steamers, no casinos, no town centre, no tourists, no fascinating murals on the fine houses, just waterfalls, forest and surrounding alpine peaks, White and pearly, like a knecklace, and of course swans and people like Leo Burach who could whisper to the swans and be understood even then.

This Facebook Site documents the Atelier Gallery of Leo Burach and Christopher Haley, Simpson which existed in the centre of Luzern for about 2 years. A number of exhibitions were organised there, and my presence in Luzern gave rise to Inspirations that resulted in new paintings of Luzern and it's sublime mountainous surroundings.

These are the pictures I did for the second exhibition. I was in Luzern for 10 days and so I thought it would be good to do a clear series related to this time. I chose to do bridge variations. The painting of the domineering mountain or Hausberg as they say in German, meaning the home mountain, above the city centre of Luzern has in the distant foreground the busy road bridge which leads to the train station, as the first bridge. The bridge - die Brücke- is symbolic of new links over once insurpassable realities and also radiates associations of the visionary Die Brücke art group, not that these paintings are an expressionistic vision in style, but before I began they definitely were a vision of possibility of what I proposed in my minds eye to due in the seven days of work I decided to undertake in Luzern, making the pictures for the second exhibition on site and with sight and acrylic paint and wood Id brought from Dresden on the plane. (As things are quite expensive in Swtzerland). So the seven bridges began as a vision in my minds eye, and dictated my doings throughout the ten days. The bridge vision was the backbone to my activity there - not my real post.dinosauric backbone, which everybody has, but the leading backbone of an as yet unrealised idea. It is the idea which has lead us up and away from the dinosaur.

For the first appearance as an exhibitor in Switzerland I thought what better way to make a new beginning than by taking some of my first early mature family portraits and self portraits there and so to introduce the interested art lover from the alps to my own artistic genesis. This was a good intuitive decision of mine, because it so happened that Leo had chosen also to exhibit some of his earliest visionary works and poetic self portraits and portraits of his world at the time, when he first started bworking as a serious artist on the baltic coast. Visions of the beach and an intimation of the summer and the sea emanate from his works and of course summer romance. Leo's new family relation Joseph Burach was also included in the show- with a lovely tryptych compositon paying hommage to Renoir and Cezanne, but also to his Korean student neighbour, and last but not least Zaza from Dresden, Leo'S very charming daughter, was also allowed to contribute a work - a white faced top-hatted lipsticky self portrait - creating a feeling of ongoing familial creativity and thus great hope for the future. I shall, by and by, doing little introductions to all of these works, but for the moemnt, I hope you enjoy them and can tell which are by me! there are portraits of my two brothers abroad at night, or else sleeping, a portrait of my mother and of my grandma Molly singing, and hidden in the background my father smoking a cigar. then there is a portrait of Wieland Richter - a valued and trusted artistic friend from Dresden.
