Throwback to our August event at Noef Noef Atelier, where and were invited to showcase their both musical and Sculpture Constructions, based in the tension existed on both the arts of weaving and playing an Instrument.

This trio, composed by Piano, Guitar and a Steel structure created for the showcase, filled the room with uncommon sounds, dialog and connection.

Weaving and sound have always been intertwined. From winters spent harvesting and rhythmically beating cotton, to evenings of singing while spinning fibre; from women’s circles exchanging stories or passing on knowledge to future generations, to a more solitary practice of thinking by doing. Threads are lines both concrete and symbolic, that carry sonic memory. “What holds” is an improvisation that explores tension as a shared condition between weaving and sound. In both practices, tension is what allows structure to emerge, shaping rhythm through resistance: it gives resonance to strings and sustains the warp. A piano, a guitar, and a metal structure composed of heddles (an essential part of pattern formation on the loom) are activated as resonant bodies and manipulated using tools such as needles, a bow, and magnets. If tension is one of the conditions that allows structures to resonate, what kinds of structures are we sustaining today? In a time no longer guided by natural cycles and an absence of direct relationships with world material, what methods can we create to repair and redefine these structures from within?

If you don’t know us yet, here’s a little glimpse into who we are and what we do at Noef Noef Atelier 🌀
We are a space organised by a collective of musicians, performers & educators, where artists from different disciplines come together to create, experiment and share.
From January to June, we hosted a monthly programme of artist residencies, each culminating in a final performance. During each residency, the invited artists also opened their atelier to children of all ages through a free, open workshop or presentation of their practice — from 0 to 99 years old! 🥰
And there’s more to come! From August to December, an exciting new programme awaits, supported by different organizations and partners, alongside our open workshops for children. 🎶
