You’ve seen Millie break down how to apply verdigris and build up that unmistakable aged metal effect in the latest reel, but the technique doesn’t have to stop there.

Verdigris is the distinctive blue/green patina that forms when copper, brass or bronze reacts with moisture and air over time. It creates a naturally aged, weathered appearance which is perfect for adding age, texture and character to your miniatures.

From armour and weapons to machinery, the same approach can be adapted to create completely different kinds of weathering.

I've put together some inspiration from 4 incredible artists on how you can take those techniques and experiment with texture, colour and placement to bring age and character to your own models.

Lightning or energy swords can add interest to your army's weapons! I remember feeling a bit intimidated when I first started painting them, but it’s actually quite fun when you know how.

In this video, I walk you through an easy, step-by-step tutorial to create a crackling energy effect with minimal effort. You can change the colour of the glow to match your scheme and carry a bit of that colour onto nearby details to tie it all together with the rest of your model.

Pro Tip: keep the brightest highlights where the lightning splits or meets the blade. A few crisp points will make the whole effect feel so much brighter!

Fire and flames can completely change the feel of a miniature.

From lava bases and glowing molten details to small flame effects, there are so many ways to bring heat and atmosphere into a piece.

I’ve pulled together a few of my favourite examples and tutorials for inspiration. Whether you’re building a full lava scene, adding flames to a character, or just want to experiment with warmer colours.

There’s something really satisfying about getting those deep reds, oranges and yellows to look like they’re actually glowing, especially against darker colours.

WAAAGH! IT’S ORKTOBER! 💚

What better time to celebrate some of the greenskins taking over our hobby desks? From hulking Warbosses to wild character sculpts, here are some of my favourite Orks, showcasing the incredible variety of styles, techniques and personalities that make these miniatures so much fun to paint.

: I couldn't actually choose one! I'm forever fascinated by the intricate skill it takes to paint in a comic style, amazing!

: A perfect Ork down to every detail, every glow, every texture!

: I mean...it's an Ork...riding a shark...rule of cool applied immiediately, and that's even before this truly immaculate paint job.

The 2nd video in our Elevating Metallics series: Painting Verdigris! I love this simple method for creating verdigris - It’s quick, messy painting (my favourite).

You can use it in many situations and control the intensity to achieve different effects.

I love Arcane, and there’s something about the visual style that makes it particularly suited to miniature painting.

The exaggerated features, painterly rendering and dramatic use of colour and light all translate so well onto a miniature giving painters plenty of opportunities to emphasise the character.

: Main character energy in miniature form. So impressive to get such a level of detail on Jinx on a smaller scale, with the OSL too!

: I've been obsessing over this since I saw it. I feel like the tones and shading on Silco's face is so perfect and accurate to the anime.

: Heimerdinger! I love this scene in season 2 and Amalia has brought it to life in such a beautiful way. Everything about him is stunning but those eyes are the stand out feature for me!

We recently shared a tutorial on elevating true metallics, looking at how washes, contrast and added volume can take metallic paints beyond a flat, even finish.

I've put together some pieces to show some different ways those techniques can be applied in practice.

These examples take metallics in different directions, from clean, polished armour to much more heavily weathered and worn surfaces. Adding variation in colour, texture and weathering can completely change the way a metallic finish reads, even when you're working with the same basic techniques.

Hopefully this gives you a few ideas to experiment with in your own projects, whether you're painting pristine armour or something that's seen considerably better days.

Worn leather is such a fun thing to paint because you get to be messy with it.

The scratches don’t need to be perfect and texture adds to the result!

It’s basically an excuse to embrace the scruffiness - which is my favourite kind of painting.

Pro tip: Make sure you rinse and reload your fine detail brush regularly. Smaller brushes hold less paint, so it's much easier for the paint to start drying in the bristles. Keeping your brush clean and freshly loaded will give you much better control and help protect your brush.

Snow and ice are perfect for building atmosphere around a miniature.

From a few frozen details on a base to a full winter diorama, there are so many materials and techniques you can use to make a scene feel cold, harsh and completely immersive.

Here are some of my favourite tutorials and standout pieces to inspire your own frozen worlds. Experiment with textures, create icicles, build up snow and think about how the environment can help tell the story of your miniature.
