A good base can completely change how a miniature looks but when you are painting a whole army it’s important to keep it simple.

In this reel, I'm sharing a quick and beginner-friendly dirt base that will look great on the tabletop using simple materials and things you have laying around.

Millie from Redgrass 💛

Pro Tip: Add a few small rocks before applying your texture. Varying the height of the base makes it feel more natural and creates visual interest without adding much extra work.

There’s just something about their beards and personality filled faces.

I can almost hear the voices of dwarves whenever I see them.

From grumpy expressions and enormous beards to weathered armour and tiny details, there’s so much character packed into these little guys.

: Obsessing over this purple base coat just peeking through setting everything ok. He's grand and he knows it!

: What a guy! The personality put across here is just stunning. I love the texture of the beard against that gorgeous NMM.

: This colour palette speaks to me. Soft and cohesive, yet so impactful. (Also I love his little red nose!)

Show me some of your bearded dwarves in the comments!

Save for inspo!

Axes might look like a fairly simple weapon at first glance, but they’re actually a fantastic opportunity to play with different textures, materials and effects.

From polished steel and convincing NMM, to glowing runes, worn edges, chipped paint and rusty metal, which direction you decide completely changes the character.

I've put together some of my favourite ways artist customise the axes to their models and how to achieve the effects. For more, check out the artists pages where you can find more images, more options and extra tutorials!

What’s your favourite effect to add to weapons?

There’s something about painting dragons that gives you so much to play with. Scales, textures, colour, lighting, wings, glowing effects… the possibilities are endless.

They always hold a special place in my heart and are always so eye catching!

: I love the incredible blue tones here. The contrast between the vibrant wings, metallic armour and darker shadows makes it so striking. (The face detail is a real highlight for me too!)

: The colour palette on this one is gorgeous. The warm reds and pale tones give the dragon such a distinctive look. So realistic.

: The forest dragon! The greens, natural textures and incredible tree like details make the whole piece a part of the environment.

: The atmosphere on this piece is what really grabbed me. The blue palette, bright glow and detailed texture give it such a strong impact.

So many different ways to approach the same creature and that's what makes dragon miniatures so exciting.

A few weeks ago, we had the chance to sit down with Aaron Clark and ask him about his experience on Miniature Masters.

At the time, we had no idea how his journey would end... Now we finally know that Aaron is the winner of Miniature Masters!

So it feels like the perfect time to share our conversation with him and hear what the competition was really like from the inside.

A huge congratulations, Aaron, from all of us at Redgrass!

Painting black colour schemes can be a nightmare - it’s often peoples least favourite colour to paint, and I’ve always struggled to get the highlights just right. It always comes out either too grey or with no volume.

That's why, in this video, I'm sharing my top tips to help you not only paint black, but understand what you're painting too.

We will explore how your light source (both where it comes from and what type of light it is) determines where your highlights go and what colour they should be, like using warmer tones for a sun reflection versus a moon reflection and how taking a picture of your miniature beforehand can make a big difference!

Millie from Redgrass 💛

Pro tip: If your black starts looking too grey, add a coloured glaze over the highlights to act as a filter.

Clearly this week (as in a lot of other weeks) I'm drawn in by use of colour. These are no exception and the pieces I'm obsessing over this week

: What can I say. It's just gorgeous isn't it, the colour scheme, the smooth blends on the skin, the details and accessories!
miniatureart: I can't stop looking at this piece. I saw it in a post in early stages a while back and have been anticipating seeing the final result. It does not disappoint! Every angle is a masterpiece - make sure you check Roman's page for every angle!

: I've just started painting a bust myself and I see coloured hair in my bust painting future - the ultimate inspo seeing it executed so beautifully.

What's inspired you this week?

I think painting cloaks is something that used to fill me with dread. I'd actively avoid anything with too much fabric. So seeing what can be done with them to give our models a boost of personality is astounding and inspirational.

What I really love is how the additional detail you can add to a cloak can completely change the theme and look of a miniature. From texture, fur, differing fabrics, emblems and embroidey. You can really find what works for you, and what sets your models apart!

It’s International Cat Day, so naturally, the cats are taking over the feed.

Tiny cats, superhero cats, space cats, slightly suspicious cats... and one tiger who heard “Cat Day” and decided that was close enough.

The miniature world clearly understands that every adventure is better with a feline companion.
Some are brave. Some are adorable. Some look like they are quietly planning your downfall.

Here are four of our favourite feline appearances in miniature art:

I don't know about you, but I love seeing all the different ways people paint swords. Power swords, lightning, fire, glowing magical weapons, insane NMM... the possibilities are endless.

I've put together some of my favourites this week for a little inspiration! It's amazing how much impact a weapon can have on the overall look of a miniature.

: No shortage of incredible swords here, that's for sure, but I absolutely love this lightning effect.

: The glow and shine on this sword are so beautifully executed.

: I can't get enough of this gradient—it's absolutely magical.

: Not just incredible NMM, but NMM with reflected colour. Beautifully done.

I highly recommend checking out the step-by-step guides and video tutorials on each of these artists' pages. There are some fantastic lessons and techniques to learn from!

Which of these four sword effects would you most like to try?
