The Portail des Nations is open! 🎉

On June 7th, 700 guests joined us for the inauguration. A truly unforgettable day. Thank you to our partners, families, friends, and all who made this possible.

But why the Portail des Nations, and why Geneva? Because the UN is so much more than summits and Blue Helmets. Every day, it is UNHCR, WHO, UNICEF, WFP, and dozens more quietly shaping our world. And Geneva, home to 40+ international organizations, is where it all comes together.

The Portail des Nations was created to make this visible. Come and experience Together.

Le 7 juin, 700 invités nous ont rejoints pour l'inauguration, une journée vraiment inoubliable. Merci à nos partenaires, familles, amis et à tous ceux qui ont rendu cela possible.

Mais pourquoi le Portail des Nations, et pourquoi Genève ? Parce que l'ONU est bien plus que des sommets et des Casques bleus. Chaque jour, c'est le HCR, l'OMS, l'UNICEF, le PAM et des dizaines d'autres qui façonnent silencieusement notre monde. Et Genève, qui accueille plus de 40 organisations internationales, est là où tout se réunit.

“I took my high school diploma. Without education, I am nothing.”

Those words belong to a Syrian teenager who dodged snipers on his way to school in Homs, fled to Lebanon with almost nothing, and chose his diploma as the one thing worth saving.

Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, has carried that story for years — because she knows that facts don’t move people. Stories do.

On June 7, Melissa Fleming will stand alongside Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, and Ivan Pictet, initiator of the project, to officially inaugurate the Portail des Nations.

That conviction is exactly what is built on. Three immersive pavilions. One hour. The full weight of what member-states working together actually means — felt, not just understood.

The Portail des Nations (Nations Gateway) has been generously donated to the United Nations by the Fondation Portail des Nations. As part of the donation, the Foundation has developed and produced an immersive experience called "Together" with selected contributions from United Nations entities in Geneva. It reflects the Foundation's creative vision and a new way for the public to engage with issues that are of concern to the United Nations. The United Nations expresses its appreciation to the Foundation for the support offered to the UN and the promotion of multilateralism. The UN has agreed that the Foundation will operate the Portail through the end of 2027. Beginning in 2028, the Portail will be operated by the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) and will serve as the UN's Visitor Centre.

Since June 1st, Christina Kitsos, Mayor of Geneva, has highlighted the importance of the Portail des Nations that are deeply rooted in the local community, emphasizing proximity, inclusion, and connection.

She underlined the need to bridge the gap between the local and the international, reminding us that universal values must be lived and experienced at the neighborhood level.

Geneva has a unique opportunity to foster strong adherence to these shared values among its local population, while remaining a global hub of multilateralism and international cooperation.

This commitment will also be reflected in the expected presence of tourists from around the world, local residents of Geneva, as well as younger generations, showcasing the diversity and vitality of the city.

Un ancrage local fort et des valeurs globales à Genève

Depuis le 1er juin, la maire de Genève, Christina Kitsos, a souligné l’importance de projets profondément ancrés dans la réalité locale, mettant en avant la proximité, l’inclusion et le lien avec la population.

Elle a insisté sur la nécessité de combler l’écart entre le local et l’international, rappelant que les valeurs universelles doivent être vécues concrètement au niveau des quartiers.

Genève dispose d’un rôle unique pour faire adhérer la population locale à ces valeurs communes, tout en restant un centre mondial du multilatéralisme et de la coopération internationale.

Cet engagement se traduira également par la présence attendue de touristes venus du monde entier, de Genevoises et Genevois, ainsi que des jeunes générations, reflétant pleinement la diversité et le dynamisme de Genève.

This week, we're sharing highlights from the Portail des Nations press conference, which unveiled — a unique immersive experience coming to Geneva.

Under the executive direction of Tatjana Darani, the project brings together three pavilions, fifteen real-life testimonies, and a simulated international negotiation where each visitor represents a country and votes on a collective resolution.

A vision made possible through over a decade of collaboration between public authorities, private foundations, and international stakeholders.

Opening June 12, 2026.

Cette semaine, nous vous proposons des extraits de la conférence de presse du Portail des Nations, qui a dévoilé , une expérience immersive inédite à Genève.

Sous la direction exécutive de Tatjana Darani, le projet réunit trois pavillons, quinze témoignages réels et une simulation de négociation internationale où chaque visiteur incarne un pays et vote une résolution collective.

Une initiative rendue possible grâce à plus d'une décennie de collaboration entre autorités, fondations privées et acteurs internationaux.

La réception officielle organisée aujourd’hui a réuni le Secrétaire général des Nations Unies António Guterres, le Vice-Président de la Confédération suisse et chef du Département fédéral des affaires étrangères Ignazio Cassis, la Conseillère d’État de la République et canton de Genève Nathalie Fontanet, la Conseillère administrative de la Ville de Genève Marjorie de Chastonay ainsi que le Président de la Fondation Portail des Nations Ivan Pictet, aux côtés de nombreux partenaires institutionnels et privés 🤝

À travers leurs interventions, un message commun s’est dégagé : plus que jamais, il est essentiel de rapprocher le public de l’action multilatérale et de créer des espaces de dialogue permettant de mieux comprendre le rôle de la coopération internationale dans un monde en mutation.

Le Portail des Nations porte cette ambition en créant un lieu vivant, interactif et accessible, conçu pour connecter les visiteurs au travail concret des Nations Unies à Genève et à son impact dans nos sociétés et à travers le monde.

Today’s official reception brought together United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Vice President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis, State Councillor of the Republic and Canton of Geneva Nathalie Fontanet, City Councillor of the City of Geneva Marjorie de Chastonay and President of the Portail des Nations Foundation van Pictet, alongside numerous institutional and private partners 🤝

Through their remarks, a shared message emerged: more than ever, it is essential to strengthen the connection between international institutions and the public, and to foster greater understanding of multilateral cooperation in a rapidly changing world.

The Portail des Nations embodies this ambition by creating a vibrant, interactive and accessible space designed to connect visitors with the concrete work carried out by the United Nations in Geneva and its impact on societies around the world.
