MMV expresses profound sadness at the news of Vasee Moorthy’s untimely passing – we have lost an exceptional champion of global health.

Vasee combined a scientist’s passion for innovation with a clinician’s commitment to improving the lives of the most vulnerable populations in the world. It is poignant that amongst his final endeavours, he was tapping into his knowledge of AI and R&D preparedness to accelerate breakthrough responses for Ebola in some of the hardest-hit countries in the firing line of this outbreak.

Vasee’s commitment to better therapies for neglected diseases made him an exceptional partner to help lead WHO’s systematic engagement with product development partnerships like MMV.

He also helped craft a collaborative process that enabled WHO to engage early with innovation partners on how drug development programmes for neglected diseases could optimally address the needs of patients. This reflected Vasee’s determination to challenge established ways of working and build more equitable clinical research systems worldwide.

In addition to his passion for public health innovations and commitment to patients, Vasee will be remembered as a kind and collaborative friend and partner. We will miss him sorely and send our deepest condolences to his myriad friends and his beloved family.

The West African Network for Clinical Trials of Antimalarial Drugs has launched WANECAM3, bringing together 11 partners across Africa and Europe to advance next-generation treatments for uncomplicated .

Through Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials, the consortium will evaluate novel non-artemisinin compounds and combinations, with the ambition of developing a single-dose cure that could simplify treatment, improve adherence and help address the growing threat of antimalarial drug resistance.

Co-funded by Global Health EDCTP3, Novartis and MMV, WANECAM3 builds on nearly two decades of collaboration advancing malaria treatments while strengthening clinical research capacity and scientific leadership in Africa.

This legacy includes WANECAM2, which helped advance the novel non-artemisinin treatment ganaplacide-lumefantrine through a Phase 3 clinical trial.

Tracking antimalarial drug resistance won't stop it, but it gives countries data to guide decisions around one of the greatest threats to elimination.

Scientists in Tanzania are seeing early warning signs of how this threat may be evolving. Molecular surveillance in the Kagera region has found evidence that a marker of partial artemisinin resistance is expanding geographically, even as current treatments remain effective.

This type of surveillance is essential for timely treatment-policy adjustments and preventing fully resistant parasite populations from becoming established. But surveillance is only one part of the response. Staying ahead of resistance requires action across the global malaria community.

For MMV, this means working with partners both to extend the useful life of existing medicines and to develop the next generation of antimalarials. These medicines are making use of compounds with novel mechanisms of action and higher barriers to resistance, and are being designed to simplify administration and adherence, making them potential elimination accelerators.

From discovery to delivery, collaboration across the global community underpins innovation and progress.

That spirit of collaboration was on display in Tokyo this summer, when MMV, the Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Fund and the Gates Foundation brought together partners from Japan and around the world to discuss the future of malaria R&D.

Japan has long played an important role in global health , bringing scientific expertise, research capabilities and sustained investment to the fight against malaria. The symposium was an opportunity to strengthen those connections and explore how we can continue working together to accelerate the development of new tools.

The next generation of antimalarials needs to be harder for the parasite to beat and easier for patients to take.

Encouraging new clinical results are bringing us closer to both goals, with a potential new medicine for treatment and prevention that could support a simplified dosing regimen.

A recent Phase 2 trial conducted through an Africa-Europe research consortium demonstrated favourable results for cabamiquine in combination with pyronaridine in adults and adolescents, supporting further development. Cabamiquine, one of the compounds in the combination, was co-discovered by MMV and the University od Dundee's Drug Discovery Unit.

On , as MMV's flag flies over the Pont du Mont-Blanc, we're celebrating Geneva's role as a meeting point for the global health community.

We call Geneva home, but the partnerships built and strengthened here extend around the world. From advancing next-generation medicines with partners in Mali to working with TDR to support local research solutions for global health problems, these bridges connect the expertise needed to defeat .

Many thanks to the Ville de Genève for helping us put the spotlight on the fight against malaria in a city synonymous with global health and international collaboration.

is a reminder that the fight against is an ongoing challenge, with resistance threatening the effectiveness of the tools we rely on.

Malaria parasites and their mosquito vectors have repeatedly developed resistance to the medicines and insecticides used against them. Staying ahead means continuously innovating and adapting our control and elimination strategies.

Our collective ability to anticipate and respond to resistance will largely define how the next stage of the fight against malaria unfolds.

Today, Dr Martin Fitchet and Dr Michael Adekunle Charles argue that this response must be twofold:

Sustained financial commitment to ensure countries can procure and deliver existing tools through their health systems

Continued investment in R&D for new tools to stay ahead of resistance

Both are essential, and neither is optional.
