EthnoKino Dedicated to visionaries and pioneering storytellers across the globe, we work for systemic change.

Dedicated to visionaries and pioneering storytellers across the globe, we are an international action community of practice, working towards systemic change through the power of authentic and meaningful storytelling. Our catalytic home cinema of the commons and commoning film practices intends to co-create a nourishing influential movement for societal cohesion and to enact integral transformation for planetary impact. Our aim is to explore and publicize critical scholarly and artistic perspectives of various life views and cosmologies through filmic means and, by doing so, to actively contribute to social cohesion, diversity, inclusivity and emancipation within Swiss society and beyond. We believe that independent and authentic storytelling builds solidarity and engages the audience meaningfully as it broadens minds and horizons. We seek to amplify the power of stories by facilitating funding, collaboration and impactful outreach. We support independent and transformative stories to be written, screened and shared to shift behavior and catalyze action. Up until its establishment we have screened more than 250 films and reached out to thousands of audiences. We have given 40 awards of recognition for outstanding filmmakers. We have hosted over 80 valuable guests, including award-winning documentary filmmakers, proclaimed thought leaders and inspiring visionaries.

🌿🎬 LOVE & LAND | 6th EthnoKino Film Festival 2026

📍11-13 September Cinématte Bern
📍9-11 October Kino Meiringen

What does it mean to love a land?

And what happens when that land is transformed, extracted, commodified, or taken away?

In an era of deepening inequality and unprecedented concentrations of wealth, land remains one of the most decisive forces shaping power, prosperity, identity, and belonging. This is particularly visible in Latin America, where historical patterns of land concentration continue to shape social hierarchies, political economies, livelihoods, and ecological futures.

For its 6th edition, EthnoKino Film Festival turns to LOVE & LAND, exploring the intimate and political relationships connecting people to territories, communities, ancestors, future generations, and the more-than-human world.

This year’s edition is developed in partnership with YarpuyNinchik, bringing cinema to Indigenous territories in Peru; the Wyss Academy for Nature, collaborating with us on impact filmmaking; and the Turning Land into Capital Research Project, led by the Departments of Iberian and Latin American History at the Universities of Bern and Bielefeld.

Together, these collaborations inspired an international open call for films that look beyond today’s crises and place contemporary struggles within longer histories of land ownership, extraction, capitalism, resistance, and care.

❤️ For us, love is not simply an emotion.

It can be an ethic of care, reciprocity, solidarity, resistance, and responsibility.

Welcome to LOVE & LAND.

We are very happy to announce our new partnership with The Centro de Memoria Colectiva YARPUYNINCHIK. CEMECO - Yarpuyninchik

Together we are taking cinema to indigenous territories in Peru , through mobile screens that can be carried easily:) Walther Maradiegue Lady Vinces

Our partners hold community archives, led by local teacher-leaders from the districts of Inkawasi and Kañaris, with support from the Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Catholic University (USAT). Their main objective is to recover, preserve, and disseminate the intangible heritage, living memory, and Quechua language of the Andean communities of Lambayeque.

Through an ethical and collaborative approach, the center collects photographs, historical documents, and audiovisual testimonies, digitizing them at their place of origin—which ensures that the original items never leave their territory—to provide future access to local researchers.

In addition, the project trains teachers and students in audiovisual tools and photography so that they themselves—with their own voices and perspectives—can document their history. CEMECO seeks to serve as a bridge between the past and the future, and as a space that collaborates with indigenous communities as the true owners and guardians of their ancestral knowledge.

🍀ETHNOKINO DOCUMENTARY FILM AWARD 2026

Turning Land into Capital: Historical Conjectures of the (Re-)Production of Wealth in Latin America

As part of the international research project Turning Land into Capital. Historical Conjectures of the (Re-)Production of Wealth in Latin America, a documentary film award will be presented in 2026 to outstanding films that critically engage with the reproduction of wealth through land in Latin America.

The research project examines key historical conjunctures of land concentration by wealthy elites and how these dynamics continue to shape today’s profoundly unequal patterns of wealth production in the region.

Filmmakers are especially encouraged to adopt a longer historical perspective, focusing on the period from the 1860s to the 1929 World Economic Crisis, and
the era from the 1980s to the present. Both periods laid crucial foundations for today’s unequal patterns of wealth (re-)production.
