Meet our Next artist of the Basel Soirée Evening

Shalini Mekkattu is a Basel-born Bharatanatyam & Contemporary dancer. She has trained in Bharatanatyam since childhood at Kalanikethan school of dance under Sri Krishnabavani Sritharan with complementary training in ballet & contemporary dance at the Danceworks studio. Off stage, she is working as a medical doctor.

For Basel Soirée, Shalini takes the stage both as a dancer and reciter, giving voice to the rhythms and poetry that carry the performance. A committed advocate for Indian classical dance in the region, she has organized her own Bharatanatyam performances and workshops in Basel, working to bring this long-established art form to wider audiences and finding intersections between her classical & contemporary dance practices.

We can’t wait to see her interpretation and her voice through Bharatanatyam. 🌿

Meet our dancer and choreographer Vineeta Ravindra ✨

A Bharatanatyam artist whose dance carries both precision and devotion. Vineeta began her training at twelve under Smt. Malini Ravishankar and later refined her art under Guru Dr. Prof. M. R. Krishnamurthy, continuing to deepen her practice today under the guidance of Sri. Sheejith Krishna and Smt. N. Sudarshini - has performed at temples, festivals, and stages across India and Europe, from Tanzfest Basel to the Indian Embassy in Berne.

A teacher, performer and Veena player, she brings rhythm, storytelling, and grace to everything she touches — now teaching at Kavin Natyam here in Basel.

We’re honoured to welcome her to the Basel Soirée stage and can’t wait to see her interpretation and her voice through Bharatanatyam. 🌿

Meet our next artist of the evening Dr.Vidya Shyam Vetrivel

A Bharatanatyam dancer for over 25 years, she received the mainstay of her Bharatanatyam training under Guru Kalaimamani Smt Chamundeswari Pani (UK).

She is an active choreographer and teacher and has enjoyed choreographing many different dance dramas over the last 10 years. Whilst she has always enjoyed exploring other dance styles through movement and choreography, her roots are grounded in this beautiful Indian classical dance form. She is passionate about inspiring the next generation to continue learning and engaging in Bharatanatyam through the expression of real life stories via Bharatanatyam. And this is exactly what inspired her to join the Echoes of Angelou project.

Off stage Vidya is a doctor and a passionate women’s health advocate working on different initiatives to improve health outcomes for women worldwide.

We can’t wait to see her interpretation and her voice through Bharatanatyam. 🌿

Eight artists. One stage. Four poems that changed how a generation spoke about womanhood, freedom, and belonging.

On the 29th of August, dancers from across Basel come together to give movement to Maya Angelou’s Four poems, four moods: the swagger and the ache, the longing for flight and the fierce tenderness of holding another life.

Bharatanatyam and Angelou may come from different worlds, but they speak the same language — the body as testimony, rhythm as resistance, grace as a kind of defiance.

This is what BASEL Soirée was made for.

Come sit with us.
