Video Guestbook: We were delighted to welcome Andreas Utermann, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vontobel Holding AG, and Georgina Casparis, Head & Curator Art Vontobel, to FOR ART.

Andreas Utermann shares his enthusiasm for the exhibition and for Jean Cocteau’s extraordinary versatility – spanning literature, film, drawing and graphic art. It is precisely this remarkable breadth that, for him, places Cocteau among the great artistic figures of the 20th century.

«Der Jongleur mit dem Zeichenstift»

Jean Cocteau als Zeichner – und eine Basler Privatsammlung, die erstmals nahezu vollständig öffentlich zu sehen ist.

86.8 tonnes of sand. The planned six-metre-high block did not hold its shape. What remained was a mound of sand on Münsterplatz.

Behind it lies an issue of growing urgency: sand is consumed in enormous quantities worldwide – faster than it can form naturally. FOR SAND aims to draw attention to this.

People stop. They look, discuss and ask questions. Among them was Michel Pfister, lecturer at the Institute of Architecture at FHNW
Muttenz, who came to Münsterplatz with his 16 students. In conversation with Klaus Littmann, they explored FOR SAND and the questions the project raises.

Perhaps the sudden collapse has drawn more attention to the issue than the planned gradual erosion would have.

Jean Cocteau – Drawings

His line is tender, critical, impetuous. And it has never been seen like this in Basel before. Portraits of his companions transport us to the Parisian avant-garde of the 1920s. The ho******ic gaze draws us towards the most intimate of portraits and into the autobiographically inspired Livre Blanc (1928). Hallucinatory and immediate, o***m withdrawal fuels the self-staging of the vulnerable artist Jean Cocteau (1889–1963). Letters, books and posters trace connections within a network that made cultural history through literature, opera, dance and film.

“A year of uninterrupted rain before the window of a building – from one summer to the next.”

With these words, artist Florence Jung describes the idea behind the project she developed for Kunsttage Basel 2025. Her works take the form of interventions that reveal existing spaces or contexts. They evoke another, simultaneous space – a story, an incident, a fate, sometimes narrative, sometimes metaphysical.
