Collection Martin and Veronika Burckhardt -
Of Private Treasures and Public Commitment

FOR ART warmly invites you to the opening reception:

📅 OPENING: Tuesday, May 5, 2026
🕚 6–8 p.m.
📍 FOR ART, Rittergasse 25, Basel

The exhibition offers insight into the private treasures of Martin and Veronika (“Vrone”) Burckhardt. Loans from the community of heirs, as well as drawings from the Karl August Burckhardt-Koechlin Fund at the Kupferstichkabinett of the Kunstmuseum Basel, demonstrate how closely private collecting and public engagement are intertwined.

Featuring works by, among others, Amedeo Modigliani, Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Rosemary Trockel, Leiko Ikemura, and Markus Raetz.

The exhibition is not only retrospective but also addresses a timely question: What role does private engagement play in art and culture today? It highlights how crucial individual support remains for diversity and innovation—and places responsibility for the present and future at its core.

We would be delighted to welcome you to the opening, as well as throughout the duration of the exhibition—feel free to come with friends.

Video guestbook

“The exhibition of drawings by Peter Wirz is truly a discovery. It offers an incredible insight into an extreme, complex life—into a way of being in the world that is shaped, in part, by aspects of failure, by wildly imaginative ideas in the literal sense, and by the fact that a person really had to break free and find their own way. It is an incredibly powerful exhibition, highly recommended.”
— Andreas Baur, Head of Villa Merkel (2001–2022), curator

FOR ART presents in Basel the first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the singular universe of Art Brut artist Peter Wirz (1915–2000).

“In Switzerland, Adolf Wölfli, Louis Soutter, and Aloïs Corbaz are recognized as Art Brut artists. Peter Wirz is far less known, but for me he is a real discovery. A man who speaks about Christianity, about war, su***de, Satan, heraldry, neo-historicism—in his incredibly colorful, yet also very harsh drawings. Please come; it is a true discovery, well worth a visit.“

“Alongside the inventiveness, I’m naturally struck by the use of color and also by the imagery. Some of the works are almost constructivist, others are very figurative. There’s irony, but also something tragic, and I think it’s an incredibly beautiful discovery—and I’m really delighted that you can see it there.”

Video guestbook

“It’s an incredible cosmos that opens up here, and it’s quite brutal how Peter Wirz must have felt. And yet, he didn’t just speak out about the world, but about the entire cosmos. “Magnificent” might not be the first word that comes to mind, but it’s definitely deeply moving.”

A conversation with Andres Müry. Moderated by Isabel Zürcher

Who was Peter Wirz? And what makes his work so worth seeing—and reading—to this day? Andres Müry was not deterred by the silence that long surrounded his “extraordinary” uncle. Out of their encounters, and later from examining archival materials and the estate, a book emerged: Wirziana – The Other World of Peter Wirz (vexer Verlag, 2020). This homage—part novel, part artist’s book—opens up a life lived between love and punishment, beauty and abyss.

No registration required · Free admission

📕 The book Wirziana can be purchased during the exhibition at a special price of CHF 30.00 (bookstore price: CHF 48.00).

The exhibition runs until April 25, 2026, open Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am to 6 pm, as well as by appointment

Wirziana
The Other World of Peter Wirz

Peter Wirz’s art leaves no one untouched. It bears the marks of trauma, is rooted in a fascination with heraldic symbols, and in an observation of social frameworks that cast him as an outsider. “I do not imitate,” he wrote of himself; “as an independent person, I have a style of my own.” His written commentaries, with disarming clarity, also guided us into our own theatrical reality.

The exhibition is open Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., or by appointment ([email protected]), until April 25, 2026. Admission free.
