❗️Lo Studio previewed on big screen in LUX art house,
few friends of Lo Studio appear on it.

The director of the movie Michael Schindhelm was really fascinated by some books of Hermann Hesse in his youth. He discovered that Hesse was living at that time in Ticino, a very special place where many artist and personalities inhabit and create new models, utopia and alternative way of living (Monte Verità, Dada, etc..). Two founders of the Dadaist mouvement, Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings are buried there and almost forgotten. Few years later Michael decided to buy an house there and retracing the places of these pioneers.

And how do forigners, settlers, travelers, live here now?
How do they look at the mountains in Ticino?

Outland is a documentary by Michael and Yawen Schindhelm-Yeo.
They very gently and delicately tried to look into the lives of different immigrants in Ticino. Deep and candid following the lives of this silent heroes.

We and Lo Studio also became heroes,
with our own experience.

💃Flamenco music, Garcia Lorca and different colors for painting
Mattia Cantoni is working on his last creation at Lo Studio performing arts.

Mattia's eyes shine as he begins to talk about his reserch.

Mattia lives in Lugano. Part of his past is street culture and hip-hop dancing. He worked a lot with children, taught them this type of dance. To paint Mattia studied in Milano.

He is since a while in residence at Lo Studio, working on his last creation. He explain that the main idea of the performance occurred to him unexpectedly, thanks to Garcia Lorca and his poems. Mattia began experimenting with different colors that he uses on stage. His fingers study a large white canvas, apply paint expressively with musical accompaniment by Flamenco.

Mattiа has already made a presentation of the work at Lo Studio, which prompted a discussion. The audience was pleasantly surprised how the performer share his deep thoughts.

Mattia continues to work,
And we continue to follow him.

Il punto di partenza del documentario è la convinzione dell’autore (ticinese da 15 anni) che il paesaggio tra il San Gottardo e Chiasso rappresenti ancora un magico mondo parallelo, una terra che ispira, accoglie e addirittura protegge chi viene a vivere la propria vita alle proprie condizioni.

"Outland" è prodotto da ventura film sa in coproduzione con Radiotelevisione svizzera (RSI) e sostenuto dalla Ticino Film Commission.

Negative aspects of running an artistic residence centre

We have been doing this project for 5 years already and we observe that one difficult consequence - is the departing of ours guests in residence.

We spend much time with each group of artists. We share a studio, a house. We tell each other the news from the dance world. Very often artists teach us new recipes (we even thought of running a cooking show from our kitchen). Each artist sets his own rhythm of work, the energy is boiling. This inspires us in our daily routine.

Presenting and discussing the result of research at the end of the artistic residency is always a small celebration. Emotion, excitement, discussions.

But the moment comes when it's time to leave.
We're on the doorstep again to say goodbye to the artists and wish them good luck.
This is a sad moment. This is one of the disadvantage of holding artistic residence projects.

But we are ready to move forward. We are waiting for new guests.

Battle with gravity and different shades of black at the Open Doors at Lo Studio.

It’s nice to spend a Friday evening in good company. Especially when 4 artists from Geneva and one artist from Lugano were presenting their work in the progress.

The first presentation was with Marion Baeriswyl, Aïcha El Fishawy and Lu Föscher. Their bodies were like an alive installation that was worth seeing from all sides. The dancers hypnotized the audience with their slow movements. We watched them fighting gravity, we could feel the flesh, the muscles, the tension in their bodies. They were supported by a musical set from D.C.P, a composer, which made all us plunge into a trance state.

Mattia Cantoni painted space with his emotions, colours and much black paint. The second presentation was a very personal story. Mattia was able to guide viewers through his inner battles. He was open and defenseless. That was his strength.

After the presentation of this works in progress, we had an open discussion with artists and audience. My favourite part in the discussion, is when the viewers can ask a question or give their opinion. It has been amazing to observe that everyone saw the propositions from many different angles and was not afraid to share her or his opinion.

P.S. The minestrone and the Russian song were unforgettable!

Slow morning,
or how I took part in the most gentle dance warm-up.

Music filled the dance hall. 10 minutes of a great music improvisation.
You can relax, continue to watch dreams, stretch out with pleasure.

These are new guests at Lo Studio, artistic residency program.

Marion Baeriswyl, a choreographer and dancer from Geneva, claims that this start of the training process helps to immerse the dancers in the right atmosphere. This was suggested by D.C.P, he creates music for the future performance. Every morning he creates a new music improvisation to find one wave with all members.

The main topic of their research is the maximum approximation and consideration of the movement, everything is like under a microscope. For this, Marion Baeriswyl, Aïcha El Fishawy and Luisa Schöfer slow down.

Two hours of warm-up passed quickly. In the presence of these dancers, even time melt like warm Swiss cheese. I left the dancers researching time, body weight.
