In a new report, Rush Translations Strategic Advisor Casey Schmalacker breaks down what our nationwide interpreter network actually looks like from the inside - how assignments are matched by language, dialect, location and interview type, what interpreters are screened and prepared for, and what happens when something goes wrong.

That network has reached approximately 600 active in-person interpreters, covering USCIS appointments in all 50 states handling green card, affirmative asylum, naturalization and family-based interviews nationwide.

And we're still building. Our target is 2,000 active interpreters by September 2027, with the deepest growth in the languages and dialects that are hardest to source outside major metropolitan areas.

More than 27 million U.S. residents age 5 and older report speaking English less than “very well.”

In a new research article, Emil Ismayilov, Founder and CEO of Rush Translations & Immigrant Services, examines what Census, DHS, and USCIS data can tell us about potential language-access needs surrounding USCIS interviews across the United States.

A few findings that stood out:

• California, Texas, Florida, and New York account for about 56.7% of the nation’s limited-English-proficient population.
• 12 major USCIS-associated metro areas contain approximately 13.2 million LEP residents—nearly half of the national estimate.
• Spanish has the largest absolute LEP population, while Vietnamese has the highest LEP rate among the broad language categories analyzed.

These figures do not measure actual USCIS interpreter usage. They show where public demographic and immigration data suggest potential language-access needs may be concentrated.

Important update for asylum seekers in the United States. 📋

Effective July 28, 2026, USCIS implemented a new rule that changes how affirmative asylum applications are processed. Under this rule, certain cases can now be referred directly to an immigration judge, without a prior interview.

This applies when:
📌 The application was filed more than one year after arriving in the U.S. without a valid exception
📌 The case involves serious criminal history or grounds that legally bar asylum
📌 The application does not meet the legal requirements for the five protected grounds under federal law
📌 There are documented discretionary reasons that prevent approval

The change affects both new applications and those already pending that have not yet been scheduled for an interview. Approximately 1.4 million affirmative asylum cases are currently pending, and around 444,000 could fall under the new criteria.

It's important to note: a referral to immigration court does not mean the loss of the right to seek asylum. It means the case moves from the administrative process to the judicial process, where applicants can still present arguments, evidence, and request other forms of protection.

A public comment period is open until September 28, 2026, before the rule becomes final.

Important update for anyone applying for a green card in the United States. 📋

USCIS has announced that starting September 18, 2026, only the new version of Form I-485, the application to register permanent residence or adjust status, will be accepted. Any previous version submitted by mail or electronically on or after that date will be rejected outright.

Here's what's changing:
The update comes alongside the elimination of the 2022 public charge regulation. Going forward, USCIS officers will conduct a more comprehensive, individual review of each applicant's personal and economic circumstances, including age, health, family composition, financial situation, and education or work history.

The new form will also include additional questions related to the receipt of public benefits, which will factor into the admissibility evaluation. The I-864 Affidavit of Support will remain part of the process, but will no longer carry determinative weight on its own.

What this means in practice: the green card application process is becoming more detailed and more individualized. Every element of the file, including how clearly and completely an applicant can communicate during their interview, carries more weight than before.

Important update for TPS holders in the United States. ⚠️

USCIS has extended work authorization documents for certain Temporary Protected Status beneficiaries, but only through July 10, 2026.

This extension applies to Employment Authorization Documents under Form I-766, categories A12 and C19, for nationals of Haiti, Syria, Yemen, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, and Myanmar.

After July 10, if no new legal or administrative developments occur, those protections and work authorizations may no longer be valid.

If you or someone you know holds TPS status, now is the time to review your case, confirm your documentation, and consult with an experienced immigration attorney about your options.

Our mid-year update — and what a six months it's been.

In January 2026, coordinated 18 USCIS interpretation appointments in a month. June 2026: 72.

Rush Translations was built on a simple belief: immigrant families deserve interpreters who actually show up. Here's where the first half of the year has taken us:

Our in-person USCIS interpretation, by the numbers:

🔹 283 appointments coordinated

🔹 23 languages — from Spanish to Swahili

🔹 30 states, 68 cities

🔹 94.9% of booked appointments delivered

That last number matters most. When someone's asylum or green-card interview is on the line, a no-show interpreter can cost them months, in some cases years. So reliability isn't something we market — it's the entire job.

Where we're headed: if our current growth trend holds, which we expect to hold and increase, we're on track to coordinate 100+ appointments a month by September — roughly 5x where we started the year. And that feels like the floor, not the ceiling due to increasing demand.

For many international physicians, the path to permanent residency in the United States has been anything but straightforward.

Years of training. A J-1 visa. A waiver application. An H-1B petition. Months, sometimes years, of building a career in a country that needed their expertise, while navigating an immigration process that offered few certainties.
And then, a processing hold. Cases paused. Timelines unknown.

Now, for many of those physicians, cases are moving again. Interviews are being scheduled. And after everything they've been through to get to this point, that interview represents something far greater than a procedural step.

It's the moment where everything they've worked for is on the line.

In that room, clarity matters. Every question deserves a complete, accurate answer. Every word carries weight. And for a physician whose first language isn't English, having a qualified, professional interpreter isn't a formality.

It's part of making sure that moment goes exactly as it should.

Most people think an interpreter's job starts when the USCIS officer asks the first question.
It doesn't.

Before stepping into that room, a professional interpreter has already done the work that makes everything else possible.

📋 Reviewing the type of case, adjustment of status, naturalization, asylum, each one has its own language, its own terminology, its own flow.
📄 Understanding Form G-1256, the interpreter declaration that must be completed and sworn before the interview begins. Knowing what it says, what it requires, and what it means.
🧠 Preparing for specialized vocabulary, immigration law, legal proceedings, and USCIS protocols come with terminology that can't be improvised in the moment.
📍 Knowing the field office, procedures and expectations can vary. A prepared interpreter knows what to expect before they arrive.

That level of preparation isn't extra. It's the baseline for what professional interpretation at a USCIS interview actually requires.

Because when the officer asks the first question, everything should already be in place. 💙
