la comèdia de les equivocacions is most emblematic of llopis’ idea of the composer as a collector of resonances, transforming them into “new forms of sound communication.” written to score playwright / director juli leal’s 1987 stage adaptation of shakespeare’s the comedy of errors, the music blends lyricism and exuberance, tenderness and mystery, familiarity and mystery — all refracted and relayed into a truly inimitable, ineffable work

synth pop, symphonic rock, and american minimalism resound and rebound throughout the score, accented by echoes of harpsichord, synthesizers, and the tried-and-true theatrical chorus. it’s a resonant fusion that’s entirely llopis’ own, an expression unwavering in its singular fantasticality and flair

“intarsia” opens with what might be a cello, the friction of bow on strings heightened into the realm of the synthetic. the voice of romanian composer echoes off the instrument in reams of overtone; the arrangement deepens as melodies fill the silence between figures

as șelaru’s violin enters alongside stacks of instruments, doubled and mimicking each other, tonal sources grow unclear: any might be virtual, real, or perhaps fed into another. nevertheless, the immediate effect of the piece is one of deep emotional heft
