Trooper Kyle McAcy was struck and killed by a snowplow while at the scene of a traffic crash on eastbound Interstate 80 between Ashland and Greenwood..
Around 10:00 a.m., Trooper McAcy was standing outside his patrol car when an approaching snowplow hit him during a snowstorm. Other troopers provided aid, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Trooper McAcy had served with the Nebraska State Patrol for ten years. He is survived by his fiancee.

Police Officer Julian Becerra succumbed to injuries sustained nine days earlier when he fell from an overpass in Colorado Springs during a vehicle pursuit of carjacking suspects.
The suspects had been pursued by multiple agencies over the course of several hours. At about 7:15 p.m., they attempted to carjack a second vehicle at the Love's Travel Plaza in Fountain and led officers on another pursuit toward Colorado Springs. The vehicle was partially disabled after stop sticks were deployed as it exited I-25 to South Academy Boulevard. The vehicle was stopped just east of Hartford Street, and all three occupants fled on foot as officers pursued.
Officer Becerra was chasing one of the suspects when he fell from an overpass to the pavement approximately 40 feet below. He was transported to a local hospital where he remained until succumbing to his injuries on February 11th, 2023.
All three suspects were apprehended. One of the suspects, a female, pleaded guilty to an amended count of aggravated robbery with a violent crime sentence enhancement and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
One of the men, a convicted felon, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and was sentenced to 27 years. The third, another felon and a habitual repeat offender, was sentenced to 132 years in prison.
Officer Becerra was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He had served with the Fountain Police Department for 4-1/2 years and was assigned to the Canine Unit. Survivors include his wife and two children.

Rookie Arizona police officer killed nearly 18 years after dad also died in line of duty
A 23-year-old Arizona police officer died after being shot while on duty over the weekend, more than a decade after his father also died in the line of duty.
Gila River Police Officer Joshua Briese respondedto an emergency call at a home in the Gila River Indian
Community around 2:00 a.m. Saturday, the department announced via social media. He was among several officers who responded to the scene.
Briese and another officer sustained injuries after gunshots broke out at the scene, according to the department. The gunshots also struck four other individuals. First responders took the injured individuals to a nearby hospital where Briese died from his injuries.
As of midday Saturday, the second officer was still in the hospital in "serious but stable condition, according to
the department.
Briese had been with the Gila River Police Department for less than a year and was still undergoing introductory officer training. The FBI is assisting the department with investigating the incident, according to the social media post.
The Chicago Police Department extended condolences to Briese's family and friends Monday. The department noted in its social media post the 23-year-old's father, David Leroy Briese Jr., also died in the line of duty while serving in Yellowstone County, Montana on Nov. 3,

Animal Control Officer Darrian Young succumbed to injuries sustained, when her patrol truck was struck by a drunk driver at the intersection of South Custer Road and South Raisinville Road.
She was driving on South Raisinville Road at approximately when the drunk driver ran a red light and struck her vehicle on the driver's side. She was transported to a local hospital where she passed away.
The driver who caused the collision was arrested and was arraigned on charges of second-degree murder and operating while intoxicated causing death and reckless driving causing death. The driver was sentenced to 17 to 30 years in prison.
Animal Control Officer Young had served with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office for one year and held a Special Deputy commission. She is survived by her fiance, mother and stepfather, father and stepmother, sister, step-siblings, and grandparents.

Deputy Sheriff Charlie Riley was shot and killed while assisting another officer who was interviewing a suspect.
A detective was interrogating a man as part of a sexual assault investigation. When he attempted to place the man under arrest, the suspect took his gun, and a struggle ensued. The suspect grabbed the gun and began firing, striking the detective. When Deputy Riley entered the room to assist, he was also struck. Despite being hit, ne followed the suspect into the hallway and called for backup before fatally falling, never firing his weapon.
Both deputies were transported to a hospital, where Deputy Riley succumbed to his wounds. The other deputy survived his wounds.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Deputy Riley was a United States Navy veteran and had served with the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Department for six years. He previously served with the Gonzales Police Department. Survivors include his wife, two daughters, a goddaughter, parents, a sister, and two brothers.

Sergeant Grant Candies was killed by the driver fleeing a traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Slidell near the Oak Harbor exit.
The driver was driving recklessly without a tag on the car when a deputy attempted to stop the vehicle on Brownswitch Road. When the driver refused to stop and continued to drive at speeds of 85-90 mph while swerving on the roads, a pursuit ensued. Just after midnight, Sergeant Candies was deploying a spike strip to assist with stopping the vehicle pursuit when he was struck and killed by the suspects.
The suspects, all juveniles, continued to evade St.
Tammany Parish deputies on Interstate 10 into Orleans Parish, where their vehicle crashed into a New Orleans Police Department unit near Crowder Boulevard at approximately 12:30 a.m. All suspects were apprehended, and the driver was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated flight. Two other juveniles have been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter.
The New Orleans Police Department officer in the unit struck by the suspects was injured but was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital.

Captain Helio Garcia was killed when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle at approximately on Flat Shoals Road close to Connell Road.
Captain Garcia was on patrol when a vehicle veered into his lane and hit his patrol car head-on. Captain Garcia was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries early the next morning.
The driver of the other vehicle had just finished probation and had a blood alcohol level of .194. She was initially hospitalized, but survived her injuries. She has been charged with vehicular homicide.
Captain Garcia was a United States Marine Corps veteran who had served with the South Fulton Police Department for over six years. He had previously served with the College Park Police Department and the Holy Springs Police Department and was instrumental in forming the South Fulton Police Department. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, his mother, his father, and two brothers.
Captain Garcia was posthumously promoted to Captain.

Police Officer Jim Muhlbauer and K9 Champ were killed in a vehicle crash at 10:15 pm at the intersection of East Truman Road and Benton Boulevard in Kansas City.
A vehicle was traveling at 89 miles per hour, ran a red light, and crashed into Officer Mulbauer and K9 Champ while in their patrol vehicle. The impact caused the squad car to roll over. A pedestrian was also hit. K9 Champ and the pedestrian died at the scene. Officer Muhlbauer was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The 18-year-old driver who hit the police car was also injured and was taken into police custody pending investigation. He was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. In 2024, he pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter.
Officer Muhlbauer had served with the Kansas City Police Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and child.
