WWII American Hero & Band of Brothers Legend
William "Wild Bill" Guarnere
was a legendary U.S. Army paratrooper who served during World War II. He was a prominent member of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.His fearless combat style earned him the nickname "Wild Bill." Guarnere famously made his first combat jump on D-Day, June 6, 1944, during the Allied invasion of Normandy, France.He fought bravely across Europe, including the liberation of the Netherlands and the freezing Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium, where he ultimately lost his leg while trying to save a wounded comrade.His extraordinary bravery, leadership, and brotherhood were immortalized in the acclaimed book and HBO miniseri, Band of Brothers.

On December 20, 1944, as the U.S 10th Armored Division & 1st Battalion 506th PIR performed a tactical withdrawal from Noville, the Germans attacked south to Foy, driving out the 506th. The 506th 3rd battalion counterattacked and the 2nd battalion moved north from where they had been, to secure the Foy-Bizory road.
Easy Company were now dug-in in the Bois Jacques woods with 1st and 2nd platoon overlooking Foy and 3rd platoon along the road.
The Germans started shelling the American positions. Easy Company's Gordon Carson (lower left) took shelter in his foxhole while the barrage came in, but he was struck by a tree burst which tore into his leg. He was sent back to the Aid Station in Bastogne. Here he was given Creme de Menthe as a painkiller ("They're giving the boys h***h for the pain!") as medical supplies were critically low.
While in the crowded hospital in the town he remembered "I looked around and never saw so many wounded men. I called a medic over and said 'Hey, how come you got so many wounded people around here? Aren't we evacuating anybody?', to which the medic replied 'Ain't you heard? They've got us surrounded, the poor bastards'" ♠♠

Sending up a Happy Heavenly Birthday and Gelukkige Verjaardag to my birthday twin, Robert "Rip" van Klinken today ❤
Bob was born 31 October, 1919, in Washington. After finishing school he worked in the mines and as a car mechanic. He was drafted in the U.S Selective Training and Service draft just 2 weeks before Pearl Harbor, and enlisted in the Army on August 18, 1942.
Bob was sent to Fort Lewis initially, and soon volunteered for the Airborne. He was one of the original Camp Toccoa men of Easy Company, 506th PIR, being assigned as a bazooka man in 1st platoon. He regularly topped the company's physical fitness tests.
Van Klinken jumped into Normandy on D-Day. He was wounded in the shoulder during the fighting in Carentan, when he stopped to call for a medic for a wounded man, and to take over his gr***de launcher. He was evacuated to England and recovered in time to jump with Easy into The Netherlands on 17 September for Operation Market Garden.
On 20 Sep, the regiment had departed Eindhoven for Helmond along with c.6 Cromwell tanks of the British 11th Armoured Division. Just outside Nuenen they were halted by the German 107th Panzer Brigade who had around 50 tanks & armoured vehicles at their disposal. They began firing at the Allies, and the Americans were forced to retreat. Van Klinken went out with a bazooka to try and stall the advance of a tank that was bearing down on them, but he was hit by machine gun fire. Doc Roe and Pat Christenson pulled him back to safety but he sadly died of his wounds at the field hospital. He is buried in the American Cemetery at Margraten.
Van Klinken was portrayed by Ezra Godden in Band of Brothers.
It is an honor to share a birthday with such a brave man who gave the utmost to fight for freedom and peace, and gave his life to save his comrades.

"You're gonna get me killed, Lieutenant!"
Remembering Technician Fifth Grade John "Jack" McGrath on the anniversary of his birthday. John McGrath was born in Bergen County, New Jersey, on 12 December, 1919. After the U.S entered WW2, Jack was drafted into the Army and volunteered for the paratroopers. He joined Easy Company at Fort Bragg, just after they had moved there on completion of jump training at Fort Benning. He was placed in 1st platoon under Lt Harry Welsh as a communications and bazooka man.
Jack made his first combat jump into Normandy on D-Day, 6th June, 1944. On June 13th while defending the town of Carentan during the Battle of Bloody Gulch, he and Welsh took out a German StuG III assault gun with Jack's bazooka "Lt Welsh, he decided he needed a bazooka man on a tank. Anyway, I went. When I come out finished the job, my face was all bloody from the shells of the bazooka"
Jack was awarded the Silver Star for his actions that day. He served with Easy through Operation Market Garden, Bastogne, and on to the end of the war.
After the war, Jack returned home to New Jersey and worked as a volunteer firefighter, serving as a fire chief and a fire inspector.
He was portrayed by Stephen Walters in the Band of Brothers miniseries.
Jack McGrath passed away peacefully in April 2012, aged 92.

Jimmy Fallon portrayed 1st Lieutenant George Rice in “Band of Brothers”. Rice was a real-life WWII 10th Armored Division officer who delivered vital supplies to soldiers. When he learned that the Airborne was drastically under-equipped due to being rushed from Mourmelon to slow the German advance at the Battle of the Bulge, Rice took it upon himself to load a jeep with as many ammo cans, gr***des, blankets, and rations that could fit and he raced to resupply the 506th before the German soldiers arrived. He made a total of 9 supply runs. The 7th and 8th occurred during the battle. For the 9th run, he had to drive through the German line and back across again after delivering the supplies. For his heroism, he was awarded the Bronze Star and nominated for the Medal of Honor.
