Through her delightful face pots, artist explores the complexities of human nature and identity. Humorous expressions contrast with glossy, seductive surfaces, creating a tension between appearance and interior experience. And porcelain is central to this work as its luminous surface captures colour and detail with precision, yet it also reveals every flaw.

Faye’s expressive work is inspired by the ornate ceramics of the Rococo and Baroque periods, and it brings this history into the present. In the 18th century decorative objects reflected ideals of beauty, taste and social status. Today we continue to construct identities through the image, attitudes and appearances we present to the world.

In Faye’s work the the idea that decoration can act as a shield or armour is exemplified. Decorative surfaces invite us in, while the faces themselves hint at emotions we often keep hidden, reflecting the delicate balance between what we reveal and what we conceal.

This beautiful piece is featured in Porcelain Reconsidered - on view through June 20.

In this striking diptych by UK based artist .lencovic earthy terracotta stoneware and fragile porcelain are brought together. For our current exhibition, Porcelain Reconsidered, I was drawn to her use of these two materials that highlight the tension between their contrasting qualities…rough and smooth, dark and light.

Porcelain pushes through the brown clay, exposing what lies beneath. The interaction of the clay mirrors the artist’s exploration of race, normality, identity and belonging. Linda is interested in where boundaries blur and understanding shifts. She draws from multi-ethnic roots and examines the tension between self and society and invites viewers to question fixed ideas and singular truths. Also, rather than presenting opposites, the diptych format creates an ongoing dialogue between two surfaces.

In this work porcelain becomes a material expression of the histories carried in the body, resurfacing in ways that are sometimes painful and always unpredictable.

A brief interlude from our porcelain works to mention our feature in the Fusion Magazine. Thank you to and for the wonderful article and for inviting me to participate on a panel at the Fusion Conference yesterday. I had a great time with and Fusion members discussing how we approach decision making when it comes to selecting work for the gallery. (My perspective is largely captured in this article.) It was such a fun conversation and great to be at the

Fusion (The Ontario Clay and Glass Association) is the province’s primary not-for-profit organization dedicated to makers and collectors of ceramics and glass. For over 5 decades the collective has nurtured both emerging and established talent through specialized conferences, masterclasses, and workshops, as well as their magazine, to foster mentorship and skill-sharing. It’s an honour for me to to support this fantastic, welcoming community. Thank you for the opportunity. 🙏🙏

Over the next while I’ll be talking about the artists and works in our current exhibition, Porcelain Reconsidered…beginning with Harlan House - one of Canada’s most renowned studio potters.

We have 3 porcelain vessels from the 1970s included in the exhibition as I thought they offered an important historical point of reference for this show which brings together contemporary artists working with porcelain in ways that move beyond its traditional associations with delicacy, purity, and perfection.

In the 70s, porcelain wasn’t widely available in Canada, so Harlan and his studio mates developed their own recipes and experimented with the material in ways that were very forward-thinking. He was drawn to the quiet, classical forms of Chinese porcelain, but was equally fascinated by the surfaces achieved through wood firing, particularly in the work of Ruth Gowdy McKinley.

Working in a propane kiln, Harlan began experimenting with spray-applied glazes to recreate the atmospheric, unpredictable markings of wood firing. The resulting surfaces feel both controlled and spontaneous, revealing an artist deeply committed to material exploration. We are so thrilled to have these works available.

Thank you to all who were able to attend the opening of Porcelain Reconsidered on Wednesday evening. It was wonderful to see you! We’re so grateful to the participating artists for sharing such powerful and varied approaches to porcelain and to you, for taking the time to engage with the work. We truly appreciate your support of the artists and our gallery. And thank you to for organizing the evening!

The exhibition remains on view until June 20. We’re open today and Saturday of this long weekend.

And for those who are unable to attend in person, hopefully these install shots by the talented give you a good sense of the show. We’ll continue to share closer shots of the artworks.

Thank you again to these amazing artists:

Happy Mother’s Day! Artist wrote one of my favourite essays on motherhood - so beautifully human - and the inspiration for her series of Jomon Contemporary Fertility Vessels.

I feel lucky to be able to live with this amazingly powerful sculpture in our gallery. I think it may be the only one available in North America as the series was featured during Milan Design Week. Please reach out for more information or to view in person.

We’re thrilled to introduce the artists of our upcoming exhibition, “Porcelain Reconsidered”.

Across this exhibition, porcelain is explored through the physical material, process, and meaning. It’s pushed beyond its traditional associations with delicacy and refinement and each work reflects a distinct approach where the material is tested, altered, and reimagined.

Porcelain, reimagined through fire.

In artist ‘s work, he moves porcelain far from its traditional associations with purity and refinement. Wood firing transforms the surface as ash, flame, and time mark each piece…resisting control.

The artist is drawn to the chemistry of wood ash and its relationship to glaze. I love that he approaches porcelain as something to be pushed, tested, and unsettled. He often keeps forms thick, weighted, and embedded with natural materials (eg. stones, fragments) - introducing an element of unpredictability and imperfection.

What results is porcelain at odds with expectation. Robin’s work is less about precision, more about discovery. A search for something not yet seen.
