Northwords NWT

Northwords NWT NorthWords NWT supports northern writers throughout the NWT with programming and an annual festival

Established in 2007, NorthWords NWT is a non-profit society committed to supporting northern writers throughout the territory. It is proud to foster the careers of both emerging and established NWT writers by offering throughout the year workshops, mentorships, performances, and hosting events where they can share the stage with established Canadian authors. The highlight of our programming is our

annual NorthWords Festival, held the first weekend of June in Yellowknife. The festival helps both emerging and established northern writers develop their craft by giving them the opportunity to attend and/or take part in public readings, mentorships, panel discussions, workshops, a writing contest, as well informal meetings with each other and guest authors. We have also encouraged the development of young Northern and Aboriginal writers by sponsoring events for schools.

It takes a community to make festival happen!

Today, would like to give a big thank you to the many friends, community members, and supporters who donated up to $499 to help make the 2026 Writers Festival possible.

Festivals like this are built not only through large sponsorships, but through the collective generosity of people who believe in stories, literacy, creativity, and community. Every donation — of all sizes — helped create spaces for readers, writers, artists, and storytellers to gather, connect, and celebrate northern voices.

Your support helped bring events to life, support programming, welcome authors, and create meaningful experiences for our community.

Thank you for believing in the importance of storytelling in the North.

We are so grateful to have a community that continues to show up for the arts, for books, and for each other.

Thank You, from all of us at NorthWords NWT.

Our 2026 Writers Festival has come to a close and we’re filled with gratitude for every single person who helped make this weekend so special.

Thank you to everyone who attended events, bought books, asked questions, shared stories, volunteered, sponsored, performed, moderated, hosted workshops, supported authors, and helped create spaces where creativity and community could thrive.

To our visiting and northern authors, artists, storytellers, and performers: thank you for sharing your words, experiences, humour, vulnerability, and talent with us.

To our volunteers and volunteer board members: this festival simply would not happen without your countless hours of planning, organizing, troubleshooting, lifting, carrying, scheduling, coordinating, and caring. Your dedication keeps northern literary arts alive and growing.

To our community partners, venues, sponsors, booksellers, and supporters: thank you for believing in the importance of stories and helping us bring this festival to life.

And to everyone who joined us this weekend, thank you for showing up for northern storytelling.

We hope you leave this festival inspired, connected, and carrying new stories with you.

Until next year.
