While preparing for my exhibition in New York this summer, I received a commission for a wedding gift inspired by a living willow sculpture at Tangled Garden, where the couple were married.
The original sculpture is formed by willow trained around a circular metal structure, with two rings suspended in the centre. Working at a much smaller scale, I chose rosemary to suggest the willow and built up the form through repeated impressions directly onto cotton.
Rosemary felt particularly fitting, given its traditional associations with remembrance, love, and fidelity. The studio was filled with its scent as I pressed the plants, releasing their natural oils.
The finished piece measures 30 × 40 inches and features a rod pocket at the top for hanging.
