The Quintessential Vocal Ensemble, directed by Susan Quinn, is a national and international award-winning 50-voice SATB choir from St. John's that brings together a diverse group of experienced singers who share a love of eclectic and engaging choral repertoire delivered with an exceptional standard of performance. QVE is especially known for its a ca****la singing of many styles and periods and has recently embarked on an exciting collaboration with Newfoundland composer-pianist James Hurley to perform some of his original compositions from The Living Songbook.

The Living Songbook is an award-winning creative partnership between James Hurley and Irish tenor Dean Power, who have been performing together throughout Canada and Europe since 2022. It consists of James' original compositions set to the lyrics of classic Irish and Newfoundland poets, including W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, Michael Crummey and Duncan Major. Featuring newly commissioned choral arrangements by QVE's assistant conductor, Rob Pittman, this marks our debut performance of these songs, which are sure to inspire all who appreciate good music, great poetry, and the deep historical and cultural connections between Ireland and Newfoundland.
