“Fell On Black Days”

16” x 20” acrylic on canvas.

November is Men’s Health Awareness Month (also known as Movember). As it draws to a close, I felt inspired to paint this piece in acknowledgement of men’s health (and well-being). 👊

The piece, with its homage to our beloved Norval Morrisseau, has also become another in what is now my “Seattle Series”, it would seem. 😆 And with this in mind, I aspired to do something just a little different with it. ☑️

Take (and give) care, out there. Be well. ❤️

“Back to the Howling Old Owl in the Woods”

18” x 24” acrylic on watercolour paper.

The owl (ómisiw in Swampy Cree) – another fascinatingly incredible, beautiful animal that figures prominently in cultures across the world (including our Indigenous cultures). Both revered and feared in our understandings and beliefs, the owl is often associated with: both good and bad medicines and omens, birth and death, darkness and light, communication and silence, stillness and travel, wisdom and foolishness. With all of these things to consider, what does the owl represent to you?

I again utilized colours that were more physically accurate to the appearance of, in this case, the (Great Horned) Owl, as many animals traditionally depicted in the Woodlands style do not necessarily reflect accurate colour representations. 🍂🌕🦉🍂

This was a hoot to paint (sorry, couldn’t help it), with a title from an old favourite of mine (since I was a toddler), Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”.

This is a photo of my late Grandmother (nóhkom) Isabelle Parenteau (née Muswagon) and my Uncle Hudson, in the mid-seventies. She was made to attend the Norway House Residential School in her youth.

I can certainly attest to the trauma and tragedy that have had their way in our family as a result of this (among other things). As an aside, I would also add that she was later disenfranchised for marrying a Métis man.

I regret not having the opportunity to have known her better. I do love her and this photo though. 🧡

I'm shocked to share this news of the sudden passing of Assembly of Manitoba Grand Chief Cathy Merrick. She was the first woman to be elected as G Chief of the A.M.C.
I had the pleasure of crossing paths with GC Merrick over the years and presented her portrait to her early in 2023.
My heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
