📖 We are back again to highlight a book in our Library Resource Guide for the Beading Métis Resurgence exhibition. This week our is the 2022 book “Buffalo Is the New Buffalo” by Chelsea Vowel.

Here’s a synopsis:

“Powerful stories of ‘Metis futurism’ that envision a world without violence, capitalism, or colonization. "Education is the new buffalo" is a metaphor widely used among Indigenous peoples in Canada to signify the importance of education to their survival and ability to support themselves, as once Plains nations supported themselves as buffalo peoples. The assumption is that many of the pre-Contact ways of living are forever gone, so adaptation is necessary. But Chelsea Vowel asks, ‘Instead of accepting that the buffalo, and our ancestral ways, will never come back, what if we simply ensure that they do?’ Inspired by classic and contemporary speculative fiction, these eight short stories of ‘Metis futurism’ explore Indigenous existence and resistance through the specific lens of being Metis. Expansive and eye-opening, Buffalo Is the New Buffalo rewrites our shared history in provocative and exciting ways.” - Summary provided by publisher 🦬

📚️ “Buffalo Is the New Buffalo” is one of many works in our exhibition Library Resource Guide. It is featured in the “By Two-Spirit and Indigi-q***r Authors” section of the Guide. Pick it up today at , via the link below or in our bio!

📖 This week we are kicking off our series again! We will highlight one of the many reads in the “Beading Métis Resurgence” Library Resource Guide. This week our is the 2024 book “Coexistance: Stories” by Billy-Ray Belcourt. This book is highly reccomended by Gallery 1C03 staff member Lily Gautron!

Here’s a synopsis:

“A collection of intersecting stories about Indigenous love and loneliness from a Giller-longlisted author and one of contemporary literature's most boundless minds. Across the prairies and Canada's west coast, on reservations and university campuses, at literary festivals and existential crossroads, the characters in Coexistence are searching for connection. They're learning to live with and understand one another, to see beauty and terror side by side, and to accept that the past, present, and future can inhabit a single moment. Bearing the compression, crystalline sentences, and emotional potency that have characterized his earlier books, Coexistence is a testament to Belcourt's mastery of and playfulness in any literary form. A vital addition to an already rich catalogue, this is a must-read collection and the work of an author at the height of his powers." -Synopsis by the publisher.

📚️ “Coexistance: Stories” is one of many works in our exhibition Library Resource Guide. It is featured in the “By Two-Spirit and Indigi-q***r Authors” section of the Guide. Request it for pickup through InterLibrary Loans at , via the link below or in our bio!
