Three weeks into the African Movie Festival in Manitoba (AM-FM) Filmmakers' Masterclass, and the energy, creativity, and dedication in the room have been truly inspiring.

This intensive 6-week program is designed to support emerging Black talent in Manitoba. Participants are provided with hands-on training across every stage of the filmmaking process, including directing, screenwriting, producing, editing, and business development from industry experts. The program culminates in the collaborative production of a short film created by the entire cohort.

The nine exceptionally talented and determined creatives admitted into this year’s program are already preparing to move into production on their short film. Stay tuned for more updates!

AM-FM is continually grateful to the Government of Canada through the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Manitoba Black Entrepreneurs & Small Business Program, the Black Business Initiative’s Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative, and the Foundation for Black Communities’ Black Ideas Grant (BIG) 2.0 for their ongoing commitment to supporting the African Movie Festival in Manitoba (AM-FM).

This year’s Filmmakers’ Masterclass is made additionally possible through the generous support of the Winnipeg Film Group, Film Training Manitoba, and Onalee Ames’ Studio.

🎬 CASTING CALL – SHORT FILM "CLASSIC MARK" 🎬

The African Movie Festival in Manitoba is currently casting for Classic Mark, an upcoming short film written, directed, and produced by members of the 2026 AM-FM Filmmakers' Masterclass cohort.

Classic Mark is about a young man forced to confront the consequences of his choices after a failed robbery.

Seeking:
MARK (20s) – Awkward, intelligent, and resourceful despite lacking confidence
SALLY (40s) – A warm, laid-back convenience store owner with a sharp ability to read people
THOMAS (10–12) – Mark's younger brother who looks up to him
SEAN (30s) – Sally's brother and business partner

All ethnicities encouraged to submit

📅 Shoot Date: July 11 (Overnight Shoot)

The African Movie Festival in Manitoba is pleased to announce it is now accepting applications for the 2026 Filmmakers' Masterclass. The Masterclass is an intensive six-week program designed for emerging filmmakers of African descent in Manitoba. From screenwriting and directing to editing and producing, participants will gain hands-on experience, learn from industry professionals, and collaborate to create their own short film.

This is your chance to build skills, grow your network, and bring your stories to life.

As part of this year’s incredible lineup, we are co-presenting the film FANON. Join us this weekend at the Dave Barber Cinémathèque to experience this powerful 132-minute journey directed by Céline Sallette.
