Shakespeare In The Ruins SIR produces dynamic, immersive and intimate theatrical performances in non-traditional spaces. Norbert Manitoba.

Our annual spring main stage production takes place in and amongst the Ruins of the Trappist Monastery Provincial Heritage Park in St. Our shows feature stunning sunsets, the wind on your face, and real ominous storm clouds threatening in the distance. This natural and ever changing backdrop creates a communal experience for the actors and audience, all of whom are in the heart of the action together. Special moments from our shows stay with our audience for years. Stephano swam and sang his way through his iconic first entrance in our production of The Tempest; Lady Macbeth’s hand washing scene was hauntingly torch lit and placed her waist deep in the La Salle river; during the final moments of Antony & Cleopatra the heavens opened up and a rain of mourning poured on actors and audience alike. Putting on great productions is only part of what SIR offers to Manitoba’s rich cultural landscape. SIR is unwavering in its commitment to help young people understand and truly experience the magic of theatre and Shakespeare. We have reached the minds and hearts of more than 100,000 youth through our dynamic, interactive provincial tours and student matinees. SIR also helps increase literacy rates and build community through our free inner-city programming for children and adults.

Fall is upon us, and so is a whole new theatre season! Our friends at Theatre Projects Manitoba have a beautiful, brand-new and totally Shakespearean production coming up, opening this week: "R + J: CLOSING NIGHT", written by the brilliant Jessy Ardern (who also penned the upcoming Cyrano at the Royal MTC - she's magic).

SIR founding-star Arne MacPherson is in the cast of "R + J: Closing Night", and he's hilarious and hilariously moving in it. SIR's Artistic Director Rodrigo Beilfuss might make an (odd) appearance too...

The whole cast and creative team is absolute chef's kiss!

While the Nolan blockbuster THE ODYSSEY plays in cinemas worldwide, it’s beautiful to reminisce about SIR’s journey into Greek drama over the years. With this year’s production of An Iliad, we have now tackled both Homer masterworks: The Odyssey (which is the sequel to The Iliad), was adapted for the Ruins in 2001 by Winnipeg’s Rick Chafe, and directed by Chris Gerrard-Pinker. It featured many familiar SIR artists who continue to create magic at the Ruins to this day.

Fun fact: SIR’s The Odyssey was also produced by our Nova Scotian sister company Two Planks and a Passion Theatre - from Manitoba to the lovely East; what an odyssey indeed.

SIR’s 2001 The Odyssey was playing at the Ruins when the 9/11 terrorist attacks unfolded in the US - tragically, as is so often with Greek drama, modern conflicts continue to mirror those prophetic tales from nearly 3,000 years ago.
