There's still a few days left to make a donation to MAWA as part of our Legacy Fund month campaign!

Donations made during July will be dedicated to our Legacy Fund, an endowment fund held at the Winnipeg Foundation. This fund was created in 2004 with the intention that, once fully funded, we will use it to pay for the Foundation Mentorship Program (FMP) in perpetuity. Our goal is $500 000 and we are well over half way there!

The FMP has been MAWA’s core activity since 1985. This mentorship program for women and gender expansive visual artists is offered each year because it is so effective in helping participants in their journey toward being professional artists.

Every dollar raised is partially matched by the Winnipeg Foundation and then partially matched again by Canadian Heritage. This means that a $5 donation ends up as $8.50 in the Legacy Fund account!

When you make a donation to MAWA this July, it will benefit our Legacy Fund and help us get closer to our goal of making our Foundation Mentorship Program (FMP) self-sustaining!

In 2004 we established the Legacy Fund, an endowment fund held at the Winnipeg Foundation, because we want the FMP to continue into the future no matter what. The FMP has been MAWA’s core activity since 1985. It is offered each year because it is so effective in helping participants in their journey toward being professional artists.

Ahead of the sold out Sunday afternoon Cyanotypes workshop, Daisy Wu is giving a Cyanotype demonstration! Happening today (Thursday) from 4:30 - 7:30pm in The Forks atrium on the second floor of the market building.

It's free and everyone is welcome to stop by, say hi to Daisy, ask questions and watch her demonstrate the process of creating cyanotypes.

We're going on a field trip to explore the Brokenhead Wetland Interpretive Trail on Saturday, July 18!

Take the wheelchair accessible bus leaving MAWA (329 Cumberland Ave.) at 12:30 pm, or meet us at Brokenhead at 1:45 pm.

Cost for bus $15 -link in bio for registration - spaces are limited

All welcome! No dogs please.

Explore the 2.6-km trails of this ecosystem. The wetland contains traditional medicinal plants, orchids and carnivorous plants, including 23 provincially rare species. There will be two and a half hours for independent exploration, drawing, painting or writing.

Please bring your own snacks, drinks and art supplies. No dogs, please. Washrooms are available. Sunscreen, hats, insect protection and repellent are highly recommended. The trails are wheelchair accessible.

Folks are invited to travel to Brokenhead in their own cars. Or take the wheelchair accessible bus which will depart from and return to MAWA. We estimate that the bus will arrive back at MAWA at 6 pm.

July is Legacy Fund month at MAWA! That means all donations made this month on our website, mawa.ca/donate, will be allocated to the fund. Held at the Winnipeg Foundation, the goal of this endowment fund is to pay for the Foundation Mentorship Program (FMP) FOREVER!

We want to ensure that no generation of women and gender expansive artists will be without this transformative professional program. Over the past 40 years, we have seen the impact of FMP. Mentees report “It has changed my life,” “My art career is so much further ahead,” and “It has given me the confidence to say, ‘I am an artist.’”

You’re invited to a tour and potluck with Prairie Ojibwe Environmental at Swan Lake First Nation, Manitoba. Join us to learn about traditional Ojibwe methods of growing food and observing and interacting with the land.

This event will start with an intro circle and potluck for attendees to build connections and get to know our hosts. During the tour attendees will get hands-on experience in the community permaculture gardens, go for a guided hike to learn more about biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, and hear from Elder David Scott about the history of the lands and ways to be in good relationship with it.

📢 MAWA is thrilled to announce the artists selected for the 2026/2027 Foundation Mentorship Program:

About the Foundation Mentorship Program:
The Foundation Mentorship Program (FMP) is a professional training program designed to help women and gender expansive people in the visual arts develop skills and define their decision-making by providing information, resources and support. In this year-long program, established artists (mentors) meet individually with their mentees for 3 hours per month to share their experience, expertise and advice. The entire FMP group meets for 3 hours each month, afternoon, for critiques, discussion, gallery visits and other activities.
