Visual artists are invited to join us in Brandon for a series of conversations and professional development sessions during Manitoba Showcase 2026.

Taking place September 18 and 19 at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, the program will explore printmaking, photography, artist collectives, gallery opportunities, and Manitoba Arts Council funding.

Participants are also invited to the Opening Reception on Thursday, September 17, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.

Each session has space for 100 participants, and registration is required. Attendance is free for MAN members, AGSM members, MAN member organizations, and members of organizations that belong to MAN.

MAWA's annual member show + sale is happening this fall! This year the theme is Home. Participating is easy! Just follow the steps below.

1. Be a MAWA member. To renew your membership or become one for the first time, visit mawa.ca/membership.
2. Bring one artwork to MAWA during the drop off times: Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, noon - 5pm. Max dimensions are 2ft x 2ft. Work can be framed or unframed. Our address is 329 Cumberland Ave., Suite 203.
3. Fill out the artist contract (on our website or paper copies will be available during drop off times.)
4. Tell all your friends to come to the opening November 6!

Art drop off: Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, noon - 5pm
Opening: Friday, November 6, 6 - 9pm
Exhibition runs: Wednesday - Friday, 10am - 4pm, November 6 - December 4

Home is where we live and where we return to. It is a physical space, a space of memory and of emotion. Sometimes it is where we feel the most at ease, the most ourselves. At other times it is a sense that we carry with us, like a turtle and its shell. Home can also be those well-worn objects that we move from place to place that remind us, “I am here.” Sometimes it is a dreamspace, something we aspire to finding one day. Where do we belong and find belonging?

Every MAWA member can participate by submitting a small work and, if they choose, to sell it with all proceeds going to the artist. The maximum finished dimensions we can accommodate are 2 x 2 feet. Work can be submitted framed or unframed.

MAWA was scheduled to move into our new location in the Market Lands development at the end of September. However, due to unforeseen construction delays our move is postponed.

Programming will continue at our current location, 329 Cumberland Ave., Suite 203, until further notice.

Shared studio opportunity in the Artspace building. See details below!

Unique studio opportunity:

Looking for a trustworthy, responsible and independent individual to work in a professional shared art studio environment. Ideally suited for a water-colourist, a calligrapher, or paper artist.

Currently the studio is shared by a jeweller, a painter/monoprinter, and a printmaker.

The studio is located in the Artspace Bldg in the Exchange district. The building is accessible 24/7. An individual swipe card will be provided. This card also provides elevator access. Our workspace is also individually alarmed. You will also have access to a colour copy machine and e-waste pickup.

Do you have a specific goal or artistic hurdle that could benefit from mentorship? MAWA's One-on-One Mentorship Program is accepting applications!

Application deadline: Thursday, Sept 24 at noon
One-on-One Mentorship Program runs November 2026 - April 2027
For women and gender expansive MAWA members who live in Manitoba
Cost to successful applicants: $75

A limited number of applicants will be selected. Note: Those who have been mentored in a different MAWA program in the past 3 years are ineligible.

A One-on-One Mentorship offers focussed attention from a mentor of your choice and is intended to serve your unique needs as a visual artist. Your mentor can reside anywhere, locally, nationally or internationally. Dream big and reach out to them! Who would you most like to work with? Who could help your artmaking and career the most? In order to apply, you must contact your potential mentor and get a commitment from them to meet with you for 6 hours over a period of 6 months, in person or online. MAWA will pay them $600.

You and the mentor will be responsible for setting up meeting dates and times. At the conclusion of your time together, you will both be required to provide written feedback, so that subsequent participants can benefit from your experience.

There are still a couple of spots for this outdoor Phytogram workshop taught by Madelyn Gowler!

This fascinating, alternative photo workshop will lead participants through the process of making phytograms: soaking flowers and other plant materials in an eco-developer solution of washing soda and vitamin C, then composing them on the surface of silver gelatin photographic paper. Exposing the light-sensitive paper to sunlight will create haunting impressions of the plant matter. All materials will be included, but participants are welcome to bring their own herbs, flowers or leaves and/or responsibly forage around The Forks.

Madelyn Gowler is a q***r, film-based artist focussing on materiality and experimental processes of image making. They reside in Treaty 1 territory and received their BFA from the University of Manitoba. Their films have been screened internationally at Engauge Experimental Film Festival in Seattle and Experiments in Cinema v18.4 in Albuquerque.

If you can’t make the workshop but are interested in phytograms, Gowler will be giving an interactive demonstration on Wednesday, August 12, 4:30-7:30 pm on the patio next to the outdoor bar. Margaret Laurence was born 100 year ago this month. She was raised in Neepawa and spent her early adulthood in Winnipeg, before rising to international acclaim for novels such as The Stone Angel, Jest of God and The Diviners, set in a small, fictional Manitoba town. Her writings were pivotal in establishing a Canadian “voice” in literature, by articulating the complex experiences of 20th century women.

Thanks to her bequeath to the Margaret Laurence Endowment Fund at The Winnipeg Foundation, Margaret Laurence has funded Student Interns at MAWA through the University of Manitoba Department of Women’s and Gender Studies since 2012. MAWA is honoured by this support and so proud of the many young women we have worked with over the past 14 years.

Happy birthday and thank you, to Margaret.
