I'm taking another kick at the can to gain entry to the former Mont Providence, so that a handful of the remaining survivors would be able to give their testimonies from within their former home. Even if you think you signed, could you please sign again, and circulate widely? I had to change platforms because the UX of the first petition host was so lousy, and I lost about 60 signatures!

“It will bring out our old stories, our lives. It's part of the healing process.", says Hervé Bertrand, a former resident of Mont Providence now in his 80's, of the importance of bearing witness at the institution that once was his home.

This year marks the 70th year since Quebec Premier Maurice Duplessis signed Decree 816, that would transform the Mont Providence orphanage in Montréal into a psychiatric hospital. On March 18, 1955, just over six months later, doctors would falsely diagnose the 370 resident children of the orphanage as mentally deficient, allowing for the children’s internment as psychiatric patients. Schooling at Mount Providence ceased, and the children instead worked long days. Many of these individuals allege they were the subjects of medical experimentation, testifying that as children they were given psychiatric medications and/or electroshock therapy. Some were subjected to lobotomies.

Last night, the Duplessis Orphans and I were honoured to have excerpts from the archival video of the first iteration of O douce Providence shown at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, as part of the Dream Big Collaborative Piano concert, held in partnership with the museum.
