NATASHA “COURAGE” BACCHUS
Performing ‘Mangoes,’ a powerful music piece inspired by her mother’s Guyanese heritage, with mangoes serving as a metaphor for both the bitter and the sweet. 🎉 The countdown is on, we’re one week away from Art Holm no. 9!

Joanna Hawkins sat down with Natasha “Courage” Bacchus to chat about the inspiration behind her performance called ‘Mangoes,’ coming to Art Holm no. 9 next weekend!

“Mangoes are my favourite fruit, but they also serve as a metaphor. They represent the sweet and bitter aspects of life. This performance honours my family heritage, including my ancestors from Guyana and Africa. They were enslaved and brought to Guyana to work in coffee, sugar, and sugar cane plantations. "Mangoes" is a way for me to celebrate my family’s journey from slavery to freedom, and it reflects the bittersweet nature of those experiences. That’s why it’s called "Mangoes” - Natasha “Courage” Bacchus

Natasha will be joined by two other incredible artists:

✨ Louie Sanchez, a member of the nationally acclaimed kulintang ensemble Pantayo, and recently released their self-titled EP!
✨ Aria Evans an award-winning, q***r, interdisciplinary artist whose work spans dance, theatre, and film!

Friday, November 22 @ 7:30pm

Sunday, November 24 @ 2:30pm

Art Holm no. 9 Curators: Meet Hazel Venzon

Since 2021, Art Holm’s curatorial practice is to hire curators from underrepresented groups in dance, music, and theatre, to select artists from their communities. We start this process a year before the next performance series so that we can include the curators and artists in our applications for funding. Sometimes artists schedules and lives shift, leaving us with the opportunity to select artists internally. We are immensely grateful for the curatorial vision of Hazel Venzon. Her company U 'N I Together Productions (UNIT), has agreed to partner with Art Holm for three years. With this partnership comes an offering to bring artists to our attention who are daring, dynamic, and making waves in their craft.

Hazel selected artists Louie Sanchez and Aria Evans. Thank you Hazel!

Art Holm no. 9 Curators: Meet Joanna Hawkins

We are so fortunate to have Joanna Hawkins as our Guest Curator. We first met Joanna when we presented her in Art Holm no. 5. Ever since then we offer ASL Interpretation at every show and we continue to strive to reach Winnipeg's Deaf and Hard of Hearing audiences. When Joanna selected Natasha "Courage" Bacchus, we knew we had a spectacular and powerful artist to offer to the community!

Joanna will be leading a short Question & Answer (Q&A) period after Courage's performance that will give both the Deaf and Hard of Hearing audience, and the Hearing audience, a chance to gain a deeper understanding into her artistic process and life as Deaf Artist.
