Today, on Emancipation Day, we pause to celebrate the strength and perseverance of Black communities in Canada and honour the courage, hope, and humanity of those who paved a way to freedom.

As an opera company, we also celebrate the legacy of those whose resilience lives on through the music, storytelling, and artistic expression.

This season, we're proud to present the Western Canadian premiere of Scott Joplin's Treemonisha: A Musical Reimagining.

Although Joplin completed Treemonisha in 1911, he never saw it fully staged in his lifetime. More than a century later, his vision continues to resonate through this powerful new adaptation.

Can you turn a classroom into an opera stage in 45 minutes? Absolutely! 🎭⭐

This week students at Margaret Park School chose props, slipped into costumes, created dramatic lighting (with flashlights 🔦) and performed an opera they helped write together... all in just 45 minutes.

Soprano Keely McPeek guided students to create and collaborate an original opera that had a role for every student to play. Summer opera workshops bring creativity and confidence (with plenty of laughs) to schools and camps across Winnipeg all year long.

Want to bring the magic of opera to your child’s or student’s classroom? Our free Opera Class workshops are available throughout the year.

The Asper Foundation was established over four decades ago and is a remarkable example of how philanthropy can nourish and sustain culture through generations.

Manitoba Opera is grateful for the important support The Asper Foundation provides for the company’s education and community engagement initiatives, programming, and general operations. Their dedication to creating positive change and joy through philanthropic generosity is exemplary, and their investment in Manitoba Opera helps to ensure that world-class opera remains accessible to Manitobans now and for generations to come.

As a Closing Night sponsor for The Marriage of Figaro, The Asper Foundation helped to bring a colourful comedy to life which also unfolded with heart-breaking tenderness and a call to celebrate life; furthering our mission to change peoples’ lives through the glory of opera.

Thank you to The Asper Foundation for your support of arts and culture in our community!

What A Night! ⭐

On July 14, more than 200 guests gathered at the Centennial Concert Hall to celebrate Larry Desrochers and his remarkable 26-year tenure at Manitoba Opera and an incredible life-long career dedicated to the arts.

The evening was filled with standing ovations, laughter, heartfelt stories, and plenty of memorable moments as friends, artists, supporters, and community leaders came together to honour Larry's remarkable impact on Manitoba Opera and Winnipeg's cultural community.

A program highlight was a rendition of the “Champagne Chorus” from Die Fledermaus, with the lyrics playfully rewritten in Larry’s honour by the late Rob Herriot and Ann Hodges. This cheeky version was performed by Andriana Chuchman (soprano), Lara Ciekiewicz (soprano), Tracy Dahl (soprano), David Watson (baritone), the Manitoba Opera Chorus and was conducted by Tadeusz Biernacki with piano accompaniment by Cary Denby.

It was a fitting celebration of Larry’s legacy that will continue to inspire for years to come. Bravo Larry! 👏
