🇿🇦 A HERITAGE DAY APPEAL TO SOUTH AFRICA

Today, as South Africa celebrates Heritage Day, I have one heartfelt appeal:

Let us choose peace over hatred.
Let us choose Ubuntu over division.
Let us choose brotherhood over xenophobia.

Africa is bigger than our borders.

A Nigerian, Ghanaian, Zimbabwean, Congolese, Malawian, Mozambican or any other African who lives, works or builds a life in South Africa is not the enemy.

We may have different flags, languages and cultures, but beneath those differences is something greater: we are Africans.

South Africa’s history is a reminder of what happens when people are divided, excluded and dehumanised. Let us not reproduce the very pain that Africa has spent generations fighting against.

Heritage is not only about celebrating where we come from. It is also about deciding what kind of future we want to leave behind.

So today, my appeal to South Africans is simple:

Make peace.
Embrace your African brothers and sisters.
Reject hatred against fellow Africans.
Let Ubuntu speak louder than anger.

Your heritage is beautiful.
Your culture is powerful.
Your country has a remarkable story.

Let that story be one of unity, not division.

They buried the story.

The British called it “civilization.”
But in many parts of colonial Africa, African men were carrying Europeans on their backs.

This is what colonialism could look like.

A wooden hammock or litter carried on the shoulders of African men. Colonial officials, missionaries, explorers and administrators could travel through difficult terrain with African porters, often called “bearers.”

They walked for days through forests, rivers and rough terrain, carrying people, supplies and equipment.

And the contradiction was striking.

Some missionaries travelled into Africa preaching equality and the Christian message, while African men were physically carrying them through the bush.

For many carriers, the work was brutally demanding. Historical accounts document inadequate food, little or no pay in some circumstances, forced recruitment and harsh punishment. Some carriers died from exhaustion, disease, accidents and mistreatment.

Even their identities were often erased.

European employers commonly used terms such as “boy” for African male workers, regardless of their actual age or status.

Behind the photographs of explorers, missionaries and colonial officials stood thousands of African workers whose names rarely made it into the history books.

Colonialism was not only about flags and borders.
It was also about whose body carried the weight of empire.

Black history shall never be forgotten.
